It is in the owners manual.
7 grease points on each side of front suspension/steering and 2 on rear axle

Thanks a lot Larry & Norma for the quick reply.
The problem is that i don't have the owner manual, do you have a picture or diagram of where the 7 grease point is located.

Thanks

My owners manual is a repro and is too dark to copy so sorry no picture.
They are fairly easy to find with the wheel off.
1 in centre of king pin (behind pin)
1 top of king pin
1 bottom of king pin
1 each side of top wishbone at back
1 each side of bottom wish bone at back
I hope this helps
Note that they should be greased with the suspension fully extended, that is do not put
a jack under the wishbone, always put the jack under the chassis member etc.

The fitting that gets missed the most is the one on the forward end of the driveshaft.

I don't think a 280SL has the grease point on the driveshaft

oh yes it is there. All W113 (and other M-B's of the era) have it. I chime in with DanC, it is a most often neglected service point...

Hallo Hans,

Do you have a German (Metric) Grease Nipple? The English type would not inject the grease properly ... most of the grease would be spilled.

I'll try to get a few Metric ones next time I'm in Germany.

Rolf-Dieter, a 6 mm and 8 mm grease fitting assortment is available at Canadian Tire, along with others of the inch variety.

In a 4 or 5 dollar kit are two 6 mm straight, two 8 mm straight, two 6 mm right angle and two 8 mm right angle grease fittings, if I remember what I saw yesterday (I didn`t buy them).

I would rather be able to buy individually, but I guess that`s not in the cards.  By the way, they are CAD plated.

Can someone provide an explanation why my reproduction 230SL owner`s manual calls for greasing the fittings on the four door hinges, whereas my 1967 Italian 230SL has plugs in the holes where the hinge pin grease fittings are supposed to go?  Is it even remotely possible that MB intended for us to put grease fittings in the holes, grease them with a gun, then remove the fittings and replug the holes?  It looks like there is plenty of room for grease fittings between the door and the A-pillar.

Isn't the lubrication for the doors intended to be done with the special tool available in the auxiliary tool kit (there is a picture in the tech manual)??

Indeed the Joe's photo in the manual shows the MB grease tool in the left pocket of the Auxiliary Tool Kit:
http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Accessories/Toolkit
Joe (ja17) also found a very similar tool sold by the Oregon Chain Saw company. It is still available through Amazon for about $7 - $9:

I hope this is not considered a hi-jack of pmjkhj `s thread.  I percieve that the original question was answered.  If I`m wrong, please chastise me and delete the post.  I`ll start a fresh thread.

I made a mistake (not my first one at age 68).  It`s true that one of my door hinges has a grease fitting missing, but the others that I thought were plugged actually have (or had) metric flush type Zerk fittings, as apparently they are supposed to have.

On closer inspection, what I was sure were plugs are really grease fittings, however, in trying to remove one to confirm the thread size, it immediately broke with almost no effort.  It appears to be completely dry inside and probably the threads are rusted into the hole in the hinge.  Apparently I'm not the only owner of this car that didn't look closely enough to see that they were grease fittings.  Now I have to take off the hinge to use an easy-out on the fitting.  To be safe, I'll change them all whether they break or not.  The fittings are apparently part number A0009970488 and are widely used on many Mercedes models.

I will bite the MB Canada bullet and go to the local MB dealer (no discounts) to order four new ones - from Germany probably.  I suppose it`s still better than paying 10 times their price to UPS for shipping and brokerage fees.  After all, all together they must weigh at least an ounce and would fit in a tiny matchbox.  I hope at least that they're CAD plated.

AND !!!, believe it or not, I found the Oregon Cutting Systems #26365 grease gun at my local Canadian Tire store for $8.99.

Thanks for the great information and education regarding Pagoda door hinge lubrication.

Tom,
you might want to check the sleeve (sliding) bearing behind the nipple, it could be as bad as the fitting. If you need new ones try SKF, or Federal Mogul (http://www.glycodur.de/en/lieferprogramm/index.htm)
Also note that the upper and lower hinges are different (rounded or square corners).

This is getting ridiculous. "Hey, Wolfgang, want to bet I can't design this hinge to require fifteen separate pieces and require a special Mercedes-Benz tools to take it apart?  After all we have a reputation to maintain."

I'm beginning to think that broken fitting was no accident.  Wolfgang probably designed a "doomsday procedure" in the disassembly and I couldn't find the secret button to push.

"Do I have to pull the rear axle again to get the door hinges off?", he asked as he wiped his tears on his greasy coverall sleeve.

Thanks, Alfred.

A note about the forward driveshaft grease fitting:

There should be another shorter fitting 180 degrees from the larger grease fitting. In fact the shorter fitting almost looks like nothing but a hex. You pump grease into the large fitting and once the cavity is filled, grease squirts out of the other shorter fitting. The shorter fitting is a pressure check valve. When I first greased it, it took a lot of pumps. Like maybe 20. It probably hadn't been done in many years.

Great point on the releave valve.  I forgot about that.  It allows you to fill it without worry that grease gets on the big rubber donut.

I need help understanding what has happened.  All of the door hinge grease fitting photographs above show a hex on the fitting.  Mine have an 11 mm hex.  I looked up the part number in the EPC for my car and found that it is A000 977 04 88.  I ordered them from my MB dealership and received the parts in the photo below, identified with that part number.

Note that there is no hex and no thread.  the new ones are apparently press fit fittings.  Fortunately, so far, all the fittings I have tried to remove have broken off, leaving the inside diameter of the original fitting slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the new fittings.  That means I can make the new ones work.

Does anyone understand what might have happened?  Apparently the parts changed but the part number did not.
