Windshield Sticker?
« on: July 31, 2004, 05:47:48 »
Question:  Did the 113's ('71 280sl) come with the Daimler-Benz signature windshield sticker?  If so, are these older stickers still available?
Regards,
Bob

I saw one of these stickers for sale on (German) Ebay maybe three weeks ago, coincidentally. I seem to recall seeing at least one original-looking one on a US Pagoda (maybe last year at Joe Alexander's tech session). Does anyone here know for sure?

I've been told by several "authorities" that the signature tag was introduced after 113 production ended. I have never seen a signature tag on any archive photo of Pagoda taken when it was new.

I admit that many archive and publicity photos were not in the dealer stream when the photos were taken and are not a good indication of "signature sticker correctness" but the Broadlands Road Test book has dozens of Pagoda photos showing windshields...photos taken when the cars were new...production cars from dealers. None of the Pagodas have the sticker.

Here's a quote from Yahoo W133 Group msg # 4359 by our own "Douglas":

that white "signature" windshield sticker is a
1980's vintage sticker & was never on the W113.
best,
doug

If you still want one, $1.50 each in the MBCA on-line gift shop.

fyi..  I know that the stickers were on earlier cars.  My parents bought a new 190d, took the European delivery program in 1965.  This car did in fact have the signature sticker.  I sold the car in 1990 for a mere $1k.  Had ALL of the orignal stuff, including the invoice papers, etc... sad!

I still firmly believe that the "signature sticker" wasn't put on any Pagoda by the factory. I remember when they starting putting that sticker on; it was around 1980, give or take a couple years.

What I'd love to find is the clear windshield sticker that you can see in some factory pix. I would guess that it was a "breaking-in" sticker similar to one that was on a BMW of mine of similar vintage.

Also, there was a hangtag on the battery that I've seen once in the flesh.

For thoses who do not know me  My name is bob Geco and I have a passion for the restoration for what you term stickers as engineering tags. Each had a purpose and place. If any odd ball ones come up and they are authenic! Contact me with information about this tag so that I can research it and make it availible again.
Important things I look for are type of material information was put on , color , type backing type style , part number and color. Some engineering tags or instance on the expansion tank were yellow and the next year white with red lettering same part number just a little bit of a different design.
Thank You
Bob Geco

Called MB Classic Center on this one.  MB did indeed put a signature window sticker on the 113's.  You can still by them from the MB dealer for under $2.00 (USD).  Part number is 115-584-0640.  The old stickers read "a DAIMLER-BENZ product" with the signature under this...

Please don't take the Classic Center as the authority on this one. Frankly, they don't know squat.

Ask Bob Hatch, Bob Platz, Alex Dearborn or Tom Hanson. They're far more reliable sources.

I just went through some photgraphs that were taken 16+ years ago of 113's. I did not see a Daimler Benz sticker on any of them. I would have to agree with Doug, consult an expert.

Very strange. You can't get them here at all unless you buy a new factory windshield to go with them. Anything out there ( yeah , on ebay ) are probably fakes.

So, maybe it's different in the USA as Canada has a totally separate deal from that country. Oh, and 113's don't have them so don't bother yourselves over it.
