Tail light wire harness covers
« on: November 11, 2013, 16:42:29 »
I have been trying to research the wire harness covers for the tail lights that are in the trunk. There are two on either side and they protect the harness as it heads back toward the tail lights. They are about 31" long and 4" wide with (4) mounting screws. There are two materials, metal and plastic. As far as I can tell, they fit in both sedans and coupes/cabs. Metal cover is pictured.

So the question is, what cars came with the metal and which came with the plastic?

My '68 W111 should have had plastic on both sides. When I bought the car though, the right side was metal. There was a blown muffler which probably warpped the original plastic one. On that side only, there are two screw mounting patterns. One pattern for the original plastic (were filled with silicone) and one pattern for the metal cover. Apparently the two covers use different hole patterns.

Since the plastic cover is a #108 number, it was made '65 and on. Not totally sure what the part number of the metal one is. My guess is that the pre-'65 cars had metal and after that was plastic.

Can anyone confirm?

So here is the official ruling according to Dave Gallon. All W110 and 111 cars and then some used plastic harness covers on both sides. They were continued with the W108 as well. The metal cover? It is only used on the right side and only on certain cars such as the W112 that had larger tires. There is no left side metal cover and if you find one, let me know.

In support of this statement, my '62 coupe has plastic on both sides.
