rear speakers?
« on: March 30, 2013, 02:31:54 »
Since I was posting pictures, I wanted to ask if the covers I have in the rear are supposed to house a pair of speakers?  Were these original?  I find no speakers or wires, just conspicuous round holes.  I plan to add a pair and an Ipod player of some kind, but  wanted to know the originality of the covers and other suggestions for mounting the base unit.

Thanks,
Matt

Not original, though a lot of our cars got them as stereo tape players began to enter the market starting in the late '60s. The only original speaker is the one atop the dashboard. The rear shelf is the most logical location for stereo speakers. My car had them and an old 8-track! When I redid the interior, I installed new speakers, added an amplifier under the shelf and an ipod connection coming out of the ash tray. I'm willing to sacrifice some originality for good, clear music on the road. :)

That sounds great! (pun intended  ;D), I eventually will do the same or even a bluetooth version.

The only original speaker is the one atop the dashboard.

Not exactly. When Mercedes started to offer stereo radios such as Becker Europa Stereo, they installed two speakers at the bottom ahead of the A pillar.

Here is a link to a photo of an original square stereo speaker.

And here is a photo of an old Blaupunkt speaker. A pair of these are in
my 1969 pagoda.

At least to me, it looks a bit more elegant than the square box style.

Mine were in the rear shelf. I ripped them out and just use the 2 in the front and sounds fine.  I had a carpenter make a new wood piece (versus replacing the entire shelf) and ordered new carpet for the shelf.  Really like the look without speakers back there.  Got to have some originality

I have been thinking in recent years always something about the sound in the pagoda. I have now come to this solution. No hole drill, great sound and even with two pagodas used.

I got one of these… smaller and cheaper and fits well in the tray between the seats… http://ue.logitech.com/en-us/product/mobile-boombox
