Found the Hood Rubber Bumper in the Parts list !!
« on: August 13, 2003, 07:21:23 »
Hi Group,

A "Pagoda mystery" has been solved!  :)  :

Examining my 230 SL, Catalog A from 1963 (only ilustrated spare parts, neither part numbers nor written descriptions), I noticed a drawing which is not in later spare parts list, and that seemed like the "famous" hood rubber bumper which part number and originality always were a mystery here:

Knowing then where to search it in the big 230 SL Spare Parts List (Edition C, 1967), I found that part number and description (Group 68/1, page 401, just before part numbers of the under dash covers):

000 987 91 35 - Covering, rubber 50 mm long, order by the meter (at front end, rear top / an Vorbau hinten oben). Quantity: 3

So according to this, we can affirm that:
- At least all 230 SL had these hood bumpers
- They were only 3 (some vintage photos show 4)
- They were 50 mm long each

Maybe some member with a 250/280 SL Spare Parts List could find now that part number there, and confirm if all W113 had these hood bumpers (I guess the part number -without drawing- should be in a similar place of the list)

Regards,

I've seen them for about $7.00 USD. 190'SL's use them basic pieces.

I tried to order it in my local MB dealer, but it seems that 000 987 91 35 is not a current valid number in MB. They haven't it in their data base.

But through that part number, I have found it in the Niemöller's catalog for Pagoda (a German specialist in spare parts for classic Mercedes cars  http://www.niemoeller.de/englisch/index.html ). They don't have the drawing of the hood bumper, but have it in the list of parts. Niemöller part number is D 68 386, and they say "Alle Bm 113", so according to Niemöller all W113 originally had these hood bumbers. Price is 12.91 Euros (around $14.72 USD) for 1 meter (= 20 hood bumpers).

Dan: When you say $7.00 USD, is it for 1 meter, or for the set of 3 hood bumpers?

I just received my Niemoller catalog last week and it's a good reference picture book for those who haven't scored a Mercedes catalog yet.  I got mine from a fella in England who has extras available.  He goes to Germany about once a month. Hey, maybe he would send you a catalog AND this rubber strip for cheap!

Albert,
The new Merc part # for this rubber is: 000 987 5070. Price Euro 12.91 from the Classic Center.
I ordered one. It is probably 1m. long.
Missed you at Heidelberg!

Hi naj,

Thanks for the info. That price exactly matches with Niemöller's "D68 386" rubber (1 meter), so they are probably selling the same part.

I'm sure you enjoyed a lot in the Heidelberg/Speyer 40th Ann. event... Thanks for the very nice picture of the commemorative plate you post in the forum!

Hello Albert - can you tell us how you (and Doug Kim, who seems to be the only other forum poster who uncovered this secret) get an uploaded photo to show in your post, rather than us having to click on it to open it? Doug wrote a while ago to put the URL link of the uploaded photo into the post, but I must be doing something wrong.

My 230SL has two of these rubber pieces, apparently original as they are quite deteriorated. Is the presence of these pieces unusual?

Hi Cees,

Yes, Doug discovered this function some time ago. After some tests, I found the way to do it:

First of all, you have to use the "Attach an Image" (with a paper clip) button below the message. Then you will have an attachment with an URL link. Next you have to use the "Insert Image" (with a landscape) button above the message, and you will have this:
"(img)(/img)"

Next is to copy/paste the URL (only the URL) between both "(img)". For instance:

"(img)http://www.sl113.org/blablablabla(/img)"

And that's all.

I have been told that some users (with slow modems) have to wait many time to download direct pictures every time they go back to the thread again. And some large photos which exceed the browser screen causes to use the browser bars in order to see them and to read the message. So, in the future, it's better to keep this function for low size (both memory and dimension) photos, in order to not disturb those users.

Hi Joe,

Yes, it's unusual (in most of the Pagodas I have ever seen). And it's unusual at least to keep all three rubber pieces.

As the drawing of this part is not showed in most of the spare parts list, it was difficult to know its part number, and even to know whether it was original or not (and for all W113?).
But now we know the answer to both questions: yes, they were original in all W113, and its current MB part number is: 000 987 5070 (1 meter, so you have 20 rubber bumpers there). I have already ordered it in my local MB dealer!

Hi, Albert,
I finally had a look (about one year later) on the 250/280 parts list and 'YES'
the bumper rubbers are listed where you said they would be.
The new part # 000 987 5070 is listed but it does not say order by metre.
According to Hans, this bumper rubber is still wrong in that the top profile should be square and not semi-circular. Perhaps some one who has original bumpers can comment??. That's why I ordered 000 987 1540 as quoted by the good Dr. but that turned up something entirely different.
Since mine are not show cars, I decided on 75mm instead of 50mm long.

My three bumpers are not original. I cut them from a meter strip, original MB with part number A 000 987 47 35, called "Rubber Section" ("Prifilgummi"). The top of the strip is flat not rounded.

I found one of mine buried underneath some wiring by the fusebox. You may want to dig around in there, Ben.

Original are 50mm long, 10mm high, and 8.5mm wide. The top is flat and there are 3 on 133.043 model....

I use the K&K part which is roughly $7.00 for a set of 3 unless the price has changed a lot. I'm actually one of their dealers and know they use the old part numbers or changed up ones when there is one available. Some places use their own numbers or a portion of the original number so you can't call around and do any shopping using the right number. Just try calling the dealer and asking for a price on 10 different numbers, the new number if they're different, or the current part number to begin with. I have a limit of 3 part numbers and prices at my not so local dealer.

This part number isn't good in the NA system from what I cam see but is available in Germany. All these cars had 3 rubber bumpers and 2 screw type adjusters in each corner.
Finding parts in the old books can take hours some times because they're not illustrated and are often not where you expect to find them. I've seen cases where the part is on the car yet not in the parts book at all. I've looked but never found some basic pieces.
