AC in the trunk?

I guess they ran lines back to an evaporator/blower in the trunk.  Maybe chauffeur-driven so they didn't care about the front temperature?

I think the 600 had the a/c unit in the back. Took up half the trunk.

My '62 coupe came with a Mark IV branded A/C unit that sat in the trunk rather than under the dash.  I have a small control panel with on/off and several fan speeds mounted within reach below the dash. There two ducts with ball-pivot directional vents inside that sits up off the rear parcel shelf and directs air forward. The huge compressor mounts under the hood as normal with very heavy rubber lines running beneath the car to the unit in the trunk.
It was seized solid from disuse when I got it so I removed the trunk unit, but kept it in my garage. I would guess this was a stateside aftermarket install as I haven't seen another with this setup, but perhaps the dealer where it was ordered through used this style.

The car is worth the asking price for the interior headrests alone.

I've seen similar rear AC in only two other Mercedes, a W108 sedan that was a Japan import and a W111 US Fintail that I own.

Rear AC was commonly used in high-end cars that were not well prepared for dash modification, including Jaguar, Rolls, Facel Vega.

I think the 1956/1957 Lincoln Mk II also had rear AC. 

New add-on kits for rear AC are available on-line.  It's a good match for some cars that have little to no under-dash space.   I'm considering it for my Alfa GTV.

I hope to resurrect the unit in my Fintail but it's not at the top of the resurrection list...

Have you repaired the AC on the trunk air?  Mine comes on but I have done nothing with respect to replacing the compressor, recharging, etc.  It's on the to-do list after many other more critical projects, like adding horns, changing the coolant, fixing the seat belts, keeping the driver door from randomly flying open...
