WRD part missing on M129 (250) engine
« on: April 06, 2014, 20:04:16 »
I need the round aluminum piece that sits between the feeler thermostat and the air valve piston on the WRD. If anyone has a spare I would be happy to buy it. If not, does anyone have the dimensions so I can have onr fabricated?

Thanks!

As far as I know, no one makes the air valve which is a rounded cylinder. It is possible to make it if you can find a cylindrical spacer with about 15 mm in height. I do not have the Circumference of the valve because it differs from one model to another. I have not seen an air valve for M129 because I have M130. However, you can measure the circumference of your WRD air valve seat and fit it by trial and error. I wish you luck.

Thank you. It is actually not the valve/cylinder I need but the piece above it. It looks like a thick aluminum washer with a hole and a recess in one side.

This is the one I am taking about, it is called the air valve. It is the one that pushes down under the thermostat pressure to shut down the air supply. Please consult the illustration in the technical manual offered by this forum. Good Luck.

The part I am looking for is missing on the photo in the technical manual, but it is present on the drawing right above it (no 3). It looks like a washer, about 5-6 mm (1/4") thick, with a recess where the heat feeler rests. This part does not move. The air valve sits below this piece and moves up and down as the heat feeler expands and contracts.

I see what you are pointing to. This is the seal between the heat feeler (thermostat) and the WRD body. This has a mating surface that prevents the coolent to leak inside the WRD. I doubt if you can fabricate this piece, otherwise, you expect coolent's leakage. The best way is to hunt for a used WRD because this piece was perfectly engineered. I do not have the dimensions of this piece. I hope this helps.

Thank you. Again, if anyone out there has this part or an excess complete WRD I would be happy to purchase it. As far as I understand it is the same WRD on all Pagodas (and W111's) except the 230's with the long heat feeler.

I am a happy man now. I received a tip from a member of the Swedish MB-club that there is a workshop that has been around for ages and which still occasionally does some work on these engines. They mostly work with trucks, but there is an old guy in the shop who knows the MB engines from the 60's. This shop happens to be just a five minutes drive from my office, and I had never heard of them before. I called them a few days ago and they would look around to see if they could help. The guy immediately knew what part I was looking for, which is pretty unusual with these cars, but was quite pessimistic. But they called today and told me that they had the part! When I picked it up the office lady was a bit apologetic - "it's a small part but I am afrait it is quite expensive" and then went on to tell me that they wanted the equivalent of $15! I would gladly have paid five or ten times that to get the car back on the road.

There was a nice W111 280SE Coupé in the shop and one or two /8's. This seems to be the place to go to if I need help with my car. They do transmissions, injections and other driveline stuff so it is very good to know.

Great to find a Pagoda buddy in Göteborg. Which workshop was it? I'm a new pag owner and it would be nice to know where to turn if issues arises...
