Shirts for the Club

Hey Folks,

What the heck is a club without some kind of shirt?  I've got a couple of ideas in mind but before I progress any further, how many of you would be interested in paying for shirts with some kind of Pagoda designs on them?  Cheaper screened T-Shirts, or embroidered polo (golf?) shirts?

I have a couple of T-shirts of the club already! Had them made just to see how it would come out.

Anyway I think the Group would take on the task of having polo shirts, T-shirts, caps or whatever else is desired. Actually the Group's board has been mulling over this for some time now. We will be having another board (chat) meeting shortly, and I will suggest we put it on the agenda, ok?

I found a couple of interesting ideas for shirts:

1)  Page 36 of the Brooklands book has a great line drawing of the "plan" and "elevation" (architectural terms) of the 113; this would be FABULOUS with some lettering as a screened T-Shirt.

2)  Page 135 of same has a sketch by Werner Buhrer circa 1970 that could be turned into an embroidered design.

I have had great success with the corporate division of Land's End for the embroidered stuff.  Screened images can be made in any number of places.

Polo Shirt Idea:  Our club logo on the front left chest with group name on right short sleve cuff.

I second the idea, as it permotes the club I have a contact who will design what goes on them, or should we just use our logo Douglas made?

Jim Pesta, who had a company named Auto-Graphics in Ohio, did a number of logos for various New England M.G. "T" Register driving tours.  I'm pretty sure if he is still in the business that he could reproduce the round logo showing the Boehringer SL in color.  Once he has the computer graphic stored, he can embroider shirts, jackets, hats - you name it.  

The line drawing of an SL could be pretty useful, too.  My wife and I have matching "Members Only" style jackets with our first names and a club logo embroidered on the front panels and a large line drawing of our 1954 M.G. TF in large format embroidered across the back.  Jim even personalized the embroidery to show our car's interior and tonneau cover color and that it has wire wheels, rather than the more common disc wheels.

My vote in the matter of a polo shirt would be for a model that has a pocket.  So many club polo shirts don't have one and it is really handy at car shows, etc.

I like Rodd's suggestion for logo (or line drawing or something) on left chest, plus club name on right sleeve.  I also like the line drawing idea, maybe showing the car in side view, with 230/250/280 SL underneath.  Simple and tasteful.

Whatever color the shirt, the embroidery should be silver, no?  If there is to be only one shirt color, perhaps a blue that matches the blue in the MB hood badge?

Sign me up for shirts! Polo and T. Two of each. I think it would be great if we came up with all kinds of Pagoda Gear; shirts, caps, coffee mugs etc. We could have a virtual club store.

The idea of a shirt and even a whole virtual store has been discussed many times off this forum, but you should be aware that there are some tax implications we were advised of by legal counsel that made us collectively balk. e-mail me offlist and I'd be happy to discuss.

We don't need any lawyers involved.  As long as I have an idea and at least 6 people I can get an embroidered shirt...Screened shirts are lower in cost but need to be higher in volume.  Taxes?  

I'm working on an idea and will have a prototype shortly.

The tax issue is a bummer, but there has to be a way around it.

If members got together to order shirts for themselves, and the club made no profit, there should be no tax issue.  At least I think not.  Groups could do this in each country to avoid international silliness.  I'd even think a member could mail shirts to other members in other countries without issue, as long it wasn't a bulk shipment and otherwise didn't look like a commercial activity.

All we'd need is a published club standard for such shirts, specifying design, size and location of design(s) (downloadable pattern, perhaps?), and perhaps a preferred shirt type/brand/style/etc.  After that it's up to the members to procure the shirts.

Perhaps there is a business owner who is also a member who could be the official maker of the club shirts.  He/she can make a few bucks on each for the trouble and the tax hit, the club can sign a licensing agreement with him  for logo use, etc.

The president of the MBCC has a business which actually makes all these items. Shirts, jackets, hats, T shirts, mugs and other stuff like that. It's his own business so he collects the money I guess.

Current president of the International Stars scetion of the MBCA ( Detroit area ) has a screen printing operation and did a bunch of promotional T shirts for me a few years ago. I gave one to Mike. He traded me for some bread ( I think it was a good trade )
