Manual Transmission Oil

I would like to change the oil of my manual gear for 67 230SL. I am looking for the right oil and viscosity to use. The current manual transmission seems to have the original oil which has the regular oil color. As I read in the Forum, some posting suggest that the manual transmission oil should be replaced with ATF (red) oil. From my past experience, manual gear box usually use 85 Wt. oil. However, this kind of oil becomes very viscous in the cold climate of NY. I would appreciate any suggestions.

ATF is correct for manual transmissions

It never should have been ordinary manual transmission oil.  It has always been AFT.  Our manuals will not shift well with the thick ordinary 90wt oil.

Yes, you need to use ATF. Regular transmission oil is too thick for some needle bearings in the transmission and they can end up being damaged.

Yes ATF is correct for the ZF as well. Before I knew this I had once drained my transmission and refilled with regular gear oil. My ZF was not happy. Was grinding gears really bad because the synchros just won't work right with anything other than ATF.
