Looking for information about converting the W113 Pagoda with a later style V8

The plain 380/560/500 aluminum V8 including the Fuel injection system is minimal lighter than the Original I 6 with cast-iron block.
Suspension and Brakes cannot be a problem since all relevant components are identical to the V8 sedan.
Suspension setup changes would only be necessary if the spring/mass/dampening system changes or the car is used differently. Lowering the vehicle is more a matter of looks or use of the car. For me this it is not necessary (I like the bumpy gravel roads that lead to cool picnic sites). The V8 sedan’s are not lowered unless 6.3 with the air suspension

Thanks for all the input. This was my first forum ever and I’m quite surprised how motivated people are to tell me what I should do/like or not, or what Mercedes etiquette is.(See first relpy) I grew up in the Germany a country where every taxi is a Mercedes, the originality does not matter as much to me. The W113 to me is an excellent engineered car that of all small roadsters is best suited to except an aluminum V8. Since I do not like to butcher and mix brands this should be a Mercedes V8.  In order do this adventure I like to get constructive input from people that want to do it have done it or know somebody that did it. Or even know about literature etc.

Why convert the 230SL? Because I enjoy doing it! I look forward to drive it, even in rain and unpolished!
I do not want to modernize or improve the car. The later V8 only because its aluminum.

The challenges:
1.   combining a 560 engine with a manual transmission
   1.1   what Mercedes Manual transmission would fit  
   1.2   bell housing bolt pattern,
   1.3   Clutch flywheel for automatic crankshaft
   1.4   Clutch operation manual or hydraulic
2.   Engine Fittment
   2.1   engine mounts
   2.2   exhaust routing
   2.3   modifying the bonnet to except the 2 cylinder banks
3.   arranging cooling capacity in given spac

4. etc

Why?  The six is just fine--if you put a faster 8 in there, you'll need to really check all the handling items and probably improve them--stiffer springs, sway bars, etc.  Might need to lower the suspension, etc.  By the time you are all done, you don't have a 113 anymore--so just get a nice car with a V8.  I'm sure the Good Doctor and Joe Alexander might have some comments about adding a V8 to the 113 Chassis.

Reason for the swap : More “Fahrvergügen”, More torque, and potential to cruse at 80MPH at 2500 RPM with appropriate Axle and 5 speed.

One of the original experimental 6.3 W113's is owned by a gent in north Germany. I spoke with him last week while he was on a visit to New York City. He bought the 6.3 Pagoda about a year ago at an auction of a Mercedes collection.

NO NO NO!!!!! Get yourself a Corvette instead of destroying a finely balanced car. The Vette is a beauty as well and would be much more suitable for what you need.

I remember reading about a company in Europe that was adding modern mechanicals to the Pagoda. Larger lighter engines, ABS and so on. If I come across it I'll pass it on.

The website is: www.mechatronik-gmbh.de It is entitled:"Operation Linke Spur" The took a V6 from a '99 C280 plus transmission. Rear Axle is 3.69 The original 280Sl engine produces 170DIN Hp @ 5750 vs. C280: 197DIN Hp @ 5500 RPM. Not a bad swap IMHO but the aluminum engine may wear oval in the bores with only a few places capable of re-boring. I put a 3.27 axle in my car and it makes a very suitable "Linke Spur" vehicle: 3100RPM @ 100Km/hr. IMHO the AL engine has nothing over the cast iron engine.

Looks like they have updated their site since I last visited them. Some of the features they offer sound nice, concealed A/C, ABS, power windows, heated seats and they even have their own suspension setup. I enjoyed watching the Pagoda going thru the twists and turns. I think I'd be tempted if I had an extra Pagoda that needed alot of work done and just have those guys do it. Of course this is sacrilege to the purists. But it's nice to think aboutit. :)

Rolf I think it is very possible, why not do it if so inclined to. I was looking around on the 190sl Group site and there is a 190 pictured with a Lexus engine installed in place of the four. It must be a hellauva ride. 8)
