230Sl Water pump ?

I'm getting a slight grinding sound when I start from cold. Its only at about 2000RPM and I think its the pump as the alternator is quite fresh !

Are all the pumps 230/250/280SL the same ?  Anyone any good prices/scources for one...........would be a good time to consider a viscous fan upgrade too.......??

Hi, Ben,
If yours is an early pump, it will still have an oil filler plug @ 12 O'clock and a level plug @ 3 o'clock looking from the front of the engine. Uses SAE 90 oil I believe.

230/280 pumps are different - heavier flange on the 280 pump to carry the extra weight?? Not sure about overall length??

Original recon pumps for 230 from MB used to be quite cheap - not any more -
Recon (A 115 200 1620 80) or new ( A 115 200 1620)

Thanks Naj..........I'll go look up the numbers. Mine DOESN'T have the plugs on it thats why I wondered. When you say heavier flange, do you mean where it bolts to the housing on the block or at the fan end ?

Rest of it looks the same and uses same gasket as 280s

There's 3 different ones.

Early 3 hole flange non visco clutch.
Later short casting 4 hole flange with visco clutch.
Late long casting 4 hole flange with visco clutch

Early cars either have an aluminum fan or a plstic one used on euro cars - all are 4 blade.

Later cars have pumps which have 6 or 8 blade fans made of die cast aluminum. The visco clutch is the same but the pump is a different length. Can't remember why right now but you do have to have the right lenght or it won't fit your car. The short one is really short.
If you're changing to power steering or adding AC sometimes this rquires a different water pump due to clearance and pully drive needs.

Ah HA !

Now thats a vital pieece of info !!  I have all the other bits to convert to PAS !!

Thanks Dan I better look closely !!

Looks like my alternator is shot and this actually may be causing the noise..........I only get 12.3 volts at high RPM !! With all the electrics on it wont make 12 at all so its just gonna drain the battery under load !

Hello,
I believe the viscous fan blades are magnesium. They burn great! Very expensive new.

Magnesium is very strong and light, but brittle. Damaged fan blades should always be replaced for sfety reasons. I have seen a hood left with a slash hole after a damaged fan blade broke.

Yeah my fan is plastic 4 blade !

I think I have a 55amp alternator, with a built in reg !

Looks like this may in fact be smoke without fire as I discovered a very worn and extremely loose fan belt, which curiously didn't squeal even when wet !!

Gonna try a new one, tension it and test again...........fingers crossed!

Yep that was it !

A new fan belt and that funny noise is gone, plus I now have over 14.6 volts before the reg cuts in !
