Care to share some facts about your Pagoda
« on: May 13, 2014, 23:17:35 »
Time for a fun post. Why not share with the members how you found your treasure and what have you done to it so far on major or minor work.

So why not share with the rest of us some of the facts and memories.

To make it easy, I've created some basic questions. Easy to copy and paste in a new reply ....

When was the first time ever you drove one?

How long have you been looking for one?

When did you purchase your car?

Did you restore it?

If yes how long did restorations take you?

When or how long after you purchased did you drive your car?

What was the longest road trip you ever took with your car?

What do you like the most about your car?

What do yo not like about your car?

reply to the last two questions only if you feel up to it (some I know like to respond "none of your business"), then again it's something to share here since all of us are having the same interest when it comes to our cars.

How much did you pay for your treasure?

Approximately how much did you invest in addition to the purchase price?

Do you have a funny story to add?

So let me start of ......

When was the first time ever you drove one? It was in the mid sixties I cannot remember the exact year, some time around 1965 or 1966 we all had dreams in our younger years.

How long have you been looking for one? It started in 2011 when I finally decided to retire and needed something to fill the gap and keep me busy.

When did you purchase your car? May 21,2013

Did you restore it? No, the previous owner had that done when he imported the car from Florida.

If yes how long did restorations take you? Was done by others I have no records of the duration.

When or how long after you purchased did you drive your car? I drove her home on May 21, 2013

What was the longest road trip you ever took with your car? Round trip last year in September 2013 to Williamsburg, VA. 1600 miles.

What do you like the most about your car? The quality and great history. Also that the car does not depreciate like all my previous cars LOL

What do you not like about your car? Nothing at all, only if it would be a standard I be  very happy camper.

reply to the last two questions only if you feel up to it (some I know like to respond "none of your business"), then again it's something to share here since all of us are having the same interest when it comes to our cars.

How much did you pay for your treasure? $42,000- Canadian

Approximately how much did you invest in addition to the purchase price? So far approx $3,400- (changed the control arm bushings, resolved the over heating problem).

Do you have a funny story to add?

After I purchased the car I used the previous owners license plates until mine arrived. When my plates did arrive I returned the previous owners plates to him. I sat down with him on his dining room table when he said "now Dieter you gave me the down payment for the car, where is the rest of the money? For a moment there I had this flash "gosh this 85 year old gentleman has last his marbles" then I said "you named your price and I paid it in full, I have the cancelled cheque and the bill of sale right here"

He got up from the table and said "I have it here and got up looking for something, when he could not find it he returned to the table and said "do you still have the car?" YES I said ... He went on, "well I saw thus car, just like yours it sold for $68k at a US auction"
He added "I left a lot of money on the table" ... We both smiled ... And left it at that.

Rolf-Dieter:  Nice idea!  Looking forward to hearing about other adventures!  Here's mine.  Jon

When was the first time ever you drove one?  1969: crashed my tatty E-type, found a 65 230SL, drove same 2yr, sold it & bought a 69 280SL 4spd A/C with 70k & blown engine.  Swapped in a '70 SL eng. from a wreck and drove another 20k.  Had a good year in '73 so sold it and bought a 6-mo old 450SL.

How long have you been looking for one?  1 month

When did you purchase your car? August 2013: '67 250SL

Did you restore it? No: it was cosmetically done 25 yrs ago and driven little since.

If yes how long did restorations take you? N/A

When or how long after you purchased did you drive your car? About 8 minutes

What was the longest road trip you ever took with your car?  50 miles (so far)

What do you like the most about your car?  Driveable as is, mostly minor mechanical issues, to be cured as we go.  Also, excellent chrome and overall patina.

What do yo not like about your car?  Fear of dings & dents.

reply to the last two questions only if you feel up to it (some I know like to respond "none of your business"), then again it's something to share here since all of us are having the same interest when it comes to our cars.

How much did you pay for your treasure? $19000

Approximately how much did you invest in addition to the purchase price? $600 so far.

Do you have a funny story to add?  Sold my 69, with 90k on the odo, in 1973 to a MBZ dealer.  About 6 mo later, I saw the car in a parking lot, stopped to see, confirmed that it was my old one.  The new owner came by and we chatted.  He was quite pleased with his recently acquired SL with only 32k miles on it!

When was the first time ever you drove one? 1971

How long have you been looking for one? 3 months

When did you purchase your car? June 1971

Did you restore it? Not really,  It had been worked on by idiots many times and I had to do a lot of return return to original fit and quality.  a biggy was a cut in the air intake hose, you can guess what that had done to the motor.

When or how long after you purchased did you drive your car? immediately

What was the longest road trip you ever took with your car? about 2500 miles from S.F to Mid Iowa to get married and back.  We made that trip in the SL twice.

What do you like the most about your car?  Most is difficult, its more like a top 10: strong high performance motor, FI, 4 wheel disc brakes, real chrome, beauty inside and out.

What do you not like about your car? I've sound dampened it.  A 60's corvette top folds no problem, no muss, nmo fuss.  It needs a 5 speed and a bigger radiator. My wife doesn't like riding shotgun but she doesn't mind driving it.

How much did you pay for your treasure? $4200

Approximately how much did you invest in addition to the purchase price?  Money? Just repairs and maintenance and lots of time and learning.

I do all my own work except body and paint.  Its been in the shop 3 weeks getting the right side straightened and painted.  Can't wait to get it back.

My daughter came back from grad school and said "Dad, I'm one of the few people I know who can drive a stick.  And I learned on a 1967 Mercedes Benz 250SL!  I love you daddy!"

So why not share with the rest of us some of the facts and memories.

To make it easy, I've created some basic questions. Easy to copy and paste in a new reply ....

When was the first time ever you drove one?    My dad had one he bought in the early 80s.   (1969)   I bought a 1970 in 2000.

How long have you been looking for one?    Since 2000.

When did you purchase your car?   I purchased my 1970 in 2000 and then my dad decided to unload his which I had driven for many years.   I would be the 3rd owner and could validate mileage, ownership, etc.

Did you restore it? .    Stripped the car down to bare metal in 2005 and spent a year in the shop.   All new rubber and new DB906.     All new interior from world uph with my local shop installing.   I've also replaced / rebuilt exhaust, rear axle, brake lines and calipers,

If yes how long did restorations take you?   2 years.

When or how long after you purchased did you drive your car?   That day

What was the longest road trip you ever took with your car?   Longest at one time was from CLE OH to PUB in Blacklick.

What do you like the most about your car?    The DB906 with parchment interior and navy carpet.

What do yo not like about your car?   Want to replace with a better fitting rag top.

reply to the last two questions only if you feel up to it (some I know like to respond "none of your business"), then again it's something to share here since all of us are having the same interest when it comes to our cars.

How much did you pay for your treasure?  $15k and I've put another $18k in it.  Total ($33k)

Approximately how much did you invest in addition to the purchase price?  $18k

Do you have a funny story to add?    I can remember when my dad owned it getting a speeding ticket in 1986 in Mill Valley CA.   Had the top down and didn't really care.   I also used to borrow from my dad and impress my friends.
