It is indeed a very very beautiful car.  I have been saying for a long time W108's are undervalued and uncherished.  I feel really guilty to have one sitting in the drive way that I am slowly picking awary at its corpse in order to support my 230 resto.  It is going to a good cause.  Its saved me thousands!

Driving in a restored W108 is a different experience altogether.   Bob has undeniably done a fantastic job bringing his car up to this standard.

One issue though....  he just needs to get a pagoda to park along side it now  ;)

Thanks Joe,

I was putzing around with Anthracite in her garage today since noon and took a break to check on web things and saw your post. Thought I would share a photo I took of a view that Anthracite sees in her reflection.

Thanks Flyair but my Anthracite is 173 non metallic. I am also emotionally moved when I see her in any situation.

It was cool, cloudy, windy, and a little rainy today so I spent some time in the garage and took a couple of pictures. Hope you enjoy them.

Another fine day.

Its a very special car.   Where can I get a copy of that magazine.  I love it.  Really like your garage as well.

Really wish I could somehow keep mine with all the time and effort I have poured into it.  Would be fantastic to have the two restored cars side by side in the garage.  Always was the dream.

How much do you think a fully restored W108 is worth?  The guy who is buying mine for 30k NZD (~23K USD) is now mucking me about so I am contemplating advertising it on the international market to see if I can get a bit more money for it.  If it was a pagoda it would be 200k+ in this condition.  Initially with all the effort I put into to it I was asking 40K.  It seems like a lot in the W108 market but I have never seen another restored example with most of them being very tired to say the least.  Tidy unrestored examples are fetching 15-20k here in New Zealand.  The step up to 30k for a restored example in my opinion is a joke.

Rob, would prefer to let it go to someone in here.  Even at 40k NZD its an absolute bargain in my humble opinion.  At 42 years old its now a moving piece of art with the same creator and many of the same design cues as the 113.   I think they are a stunning design myself.  And like the 113 they drive so superbly. Top of my wish list at some point is a 6.3 109,.. if I could afford the fuel bill.  I think I read somewhere the cost of restoring one of these was around 300k+.  A type 600 is running at a million depending on the spec!

I will try and keep my W108 if I can but at the end of the day I have really put my neck on the chopping block with the 113, and unfortunately the executioners axe is already half way through.

I would love to meet up with Bob and park our cars side by side.  I also have my grandfathers 250s that I have refurbished as backup.  I love it as well but the 280se was the pinnacle of the the 108s development and my one is very very special as its so utterly factory intact right down to the carpet.

Yet another awesome car - love the dark exterior and light interior combo.

I would also love to have a 6.3 109  - the fuel bill will be the least of my worries.... I read a write up recently that described it as a an amazing car with horrendous maintenance costs. Let's even think about a 600....

Andy, if you can keep your w108 do it. In a few years they will have all mostly disappeared given their relative low value as a collector. As a result, the few remaining may go up in price, especially the ones in superb condition like yours (I saw the fintails going up lately) . If you need to sell it now, why not trying the UK market? It's a RHD car and UK w108s must be quite rusted out by now. You may fetch more money for yours there.

I owned a 6.3 some years ago. I was lucky to get a relatively low mileage car with a interior in mint condition. But I still spent a lot of time and money bringing it back to high original factory standards. It is indeed an amazing car but there is a lot that can go wrong on it and parts prices are in another league. To the point that I decided to sell it when I considered it was at the top. This may seem strange to some as bringing a car back to high factory standards is the final objective of many enthusiasts. But I like to enjoy my cars and I drive them a lot. I was not enjoying the 6.3 anymore because it had reached the point where it deserved to be preserved rather than worn. So I had it sold by Kienle in Germany. I was very pleased with their service, I could not have fetched the same money they did if I had advertised it on my own. Andy, you may consider contacting them to sell your w108. Its condition may have them interested in it and they have clients all over the world. So a mint RHD example may have all its chances.

It is my 6.3 experience that brought me into the M117 conversions in my W111 coupe and in the Pagoda. The 6.3 is a factory hot rod, and I wanted to keep enjoying a similar driving experience into cars I like the shape better. I wanted them reliable and simpler on a technical point of view, and I indeed enjoy them a lot without that preservation vs wear dilemma I ended up having with the 6.3.

GGR,  I think your advice is sensible.  I am secretly hoping the deal is going to fall through and I can keep the car.  I can see the values rising and even if they don't 'its my baby' and what sort of monster would I be if I callously pawned off my own children  ???

The guy who is buying it is totally mucking me around so I am right on a tipping point.

I would dearly love to see some pictures of your 6.3 if you still have them.  It sounds as if it was an absolute minter!  I came quite close to buying one here in NZ a few years back.  It was the same color as my 280se, metallic sand beige, with leather tobacco interior.  I really loved the scheme and the price was only around 20k NZ.   Thats a lot of car for not very much at all!

I have tried to sell the 280se on ebay.co.uk.  It attracted a couple of comments but no takers.  It was the first time I had advertised and discovered that each cycle you have to keep paying.  We have a similar site here in NZ called www.trademe.co.nz  that is very popular.  Once you pay for a car to be listed you can list it indefinitely until it sells.

Hi Andy

Your car is beautiful and I was very tempted to buy it at your price which is low. Only problem it is a RHD and Dubai roads make it challenging to drive.
I have today located a 1973 280 SEL 4.5 which seems to be in excellent condition in Dubai which the owner is asking for about US $23000. He may come down a bit. Will check out the car on next Saturday.
