Data Card Date Stamp
« on: November 16, 2014, 14:40:14 »
The box labeled, "Ubernahmetag" in the lower left corner of the data card contains a hand-stamped date. The stamped date for my 250SL coupe is 19 April 1967. A very good friend of mine also has a 250SL and his data card is stamped 6.April 1967. We have each owned our cars for over 25 years. Since the two cars are dated only 13 days apart (and both went to the same dealer in Nurnberg) one would expect the their VIN and engine numbers to be very close. They are not. My car is 113043 10 001519 and my friend's car is ...000210. Now, I am quite certain that M-B did not build 1309 SLs in two weeks time. The engine numbers tell the same story: 129982-10-000854 (mine) vs 129982-10-000119 - 735 engines apart. (BTW, both cars still have their original engines.)
Any ideas on why the disparity in dates? When was the acceptance date stamped?

Hi,
"Uebernahmetag"  means day of delivery to the customer, mostly used only in a few countries, e.g. in Germany.
...210 was produced in January 1967, ...1519 in April 1967, both delivered in April to their customers in Nuremberg.

That's interesting. Mine is a USA delivered car and has a date of 23 June 1964 on the card, the Vin is 113 042 10 004260. I thought this was the build date. When do you think the car was built?

This confuses me; my UK spec 230SL ends 005088, and the link above suggests that it would have been made in July 1964. But my data card has a hand stamped "21 JUN 1964" on it, in the space just above Box 5. How can this be?  ???.   The car was first registered with the UK DVLA on 10 NOV 1964.

EDITED TO ADD: On second thoughts, maybe the date stamp says 21 Juli (as in German for July)? See attached photo ...

Julian,

I think the date stamp is when it was sent to the dealer so made June, sent to dealer July and first registered November sounds right.
