Don't discard your old chrome exhaust tips

One of the many ways that Mercedes has cheapened parts on the Pagoda over the years is by downgrading the quality of the chrome exhaust tips. The new ones appear to be stainless, whereas the old ones were chromed brass. You can tell by the "lip" at the end -- the new ones have a rolled lip and the gauge of the metal is much thinner.

Doug I have a Time Valve exhaust on my car and I believe these tips are unique to it.  My tips are chromed with a rolled lip and I think they are longer than the original MB tips.  Is this correct?

Hauser, I assume you replied twice because you have two tailpipes, no?  :)

If it has a rolled lip, it's the later style and not the heavier original types.

Most of the stainless systems I've seen (including the early Timevalve system on my current 280 SL) don't have chrome tips. I've found that Timevalve generally makes the tailpipes a little longer, so most owners choose to do without.

Sorry about that I didn't intend for that to happen.  Funny though, 1 post per pair of tips :D .

Doug here is the lay out of the Timevalve unit.

Doug:
This is good information. I am sure I have the new style exhaust chrome tips. Perhaps you can post a picture of the orginal side by side with the new ones to let use know what to look for.

Hauser,
Please let me know if you are happy with the Timevalve exhaust? Is it quieter or more noisy than the original, as I need to chnage mine asap
Thanks

SD, I'm very happy with the Timevalve exhaust.  When I purchased the car it was already installed which for me this was a plus.  This is my second Pagoda with the SS exhaust and I've had no complaints.  There are those that prefer the factory system.

As for the sound I would describe it as throaty.

There is one other thing I forgot to mention about the Timevalve chrome tips is that they are longer than the MB tips.  If some one would like to see a pic I would be happy to post for you. :D

Question! Why is the exhaust you take about called time valve?
I have a borella exhaust on my 1968 SL and I use the stock chrome tips.

Bob are you talking about a "Borla Exhaust."  The rear muffler on the Timevalve has the longer tail pipes as Doug explained and the chrome tips Timevalve offers are longer.
