Thermal Time Switch Location '70 automatic??
« on: September 16, 2004, 10:43:24 »
Hi, trying to identify the time switch on my 1970 sl automatic.  Is it the small switch opposite the vaccum assisted switch next to the speed relays? Thanks!

A thermal time switch is located on the driver side of the engine near the rear of the block about halfway down behind the injection pump. It is about an inch in diameter, largely made of brass, screws into the block, has a couple of wires connected to it and may have a rubber boot fitted to protect the terminals.

Thanks, but are you confusing the the low temp sender with the TTS? This looks just like a water temp switch that screws into the block.  I will look again for the TTS which sounds like it is in the same vicinity as the low temp switch.  Thanks!

No it's not.  That's the low temp switch for the ignition timing.
The TTS is screwed directly into the back of the cylinder head. Earlier engine have this on the small housing attached to the cylinder head.

James, I looked at mine last night (1970 280SL automatic). The temp. switch with one wire going to it is down lower and a little bit forward of the thermal temp switch with two wires which is located a couple inches below the bottom of the valve cover nearer the back of the block on the driver side. I'm a newcomer to all this so don't take my word for anything I say that you or anyone else determines to be incorrect!

Found it, now all I have to do is check it to see if it works.  How to test? I will see if there is a test procedure on this site, thanks!
