Coolant Low Temp Switch-Missing lead
« on: September 11, 2004, 10:32:57 »
I just noticed that my coolant low temp switch has no lead connected to it. Where does this lead connect to, and is it of any real concern that my LTS is not connected? Joe, are you out there?  Thanks!

Hello James,
There is no coolant low feature on these cars. I suspect it is a wire for a temperature sensor for the ignition or a starting aid. Let us know the location and we will figure it out.

The low coolant temperature switch on the later 280 SL is connected to pin 6 of the relay box located near the distributor.  When the car temp is under 17 degrees C this switch is closed causing the relay box to remove vacumm to the distributor via the two way valve.  This causes the distributor to advance and idle increases.  As the engine warms the low temp switch opens and vacumm is applied to the distributor.  Mine is broken and I can't find anyone who sells this switch.  It's a starting aid when the car is cold.

Thanks Jeff, hi Joe, I was not referring to a low coolant level type sensor but rather the low temp switch screwed into the block behind the FI pump. It has no wires connected to it, I think Jeff has the right information about this sensor and it's function.  Any ideas?
