Door locks and Ignition
« on: September 17, 2004, 09:24:39 »
Wonder if you can help?
THe old girl has an ignition key, but no others questions:

1) Should the ignition key work the doors and the boot (trunk)
2) Same for the glove box?
3)If not, are numbers stamped on the door lock barrels and can keys be made / obtained? (I have a reasonable MB dealer in Aberdeen)

4)Luckily the doors and trunk are unlocked but the glove box is. Can I get into it without damage? I will be taking her apart eventually for restoration.

Thanks
Malc

Step 1: get the data card from the Classic Center. It has the key codes.
Step 2: get keys from the dealer.

My 280 has a single key for glove box, doors, boot and ignition

Different key for the petrol cap. So by rights, the key that turns the ignition, should open the box.... except I do remember seeing a thread somewhere about some cars having multi keys

It's quick to remove the ignition key lock. Instructions are in the BBB. Key number is stamped on the lock cylinder. Cars after July '69 have the same key for every lock. This is how you can tell if the gas cap is original.

My car does not agree with the above quote.

Late 1971 280SL built November 70, VIN ending 021755: data card has place for TWO key codes. One is called the Chief Key "Hauptschlussel", the other is the Next Key "Nebenschlussel".

The 'Next Key' is for one door and the ignition. The 'Chief Key' works the ignition and opens the other door and all other locks. Neither of these keys opens all locks.

You can give the Neben Key to the valet parker since it does not open the trunk or glove box.

My late 1970 built 280sl (october 1970) has two keys: one that fits all locks exept the gas tank and one for the gas tank.
