Electronic Ignition options
« on: February 09, 2015, 03:14:29 »
Hi - My '69 280SL struggles at higher RPM and I have no idea the last time it had a tune-up, so I was thinking this would be a good time to upgrade to electronic ignition.  The Pertronix seems pretty popular, but I've seen on some cars it has to be modified a little to fit properly.  I've also read some about Hot Spark which is less expensive and claims no mods required.

I have a Bosch 0231116051 distributor.

Does anyone have recs between the Pertronix vs Hot Spark?

With the Pertronix would you recommend the Ignitor or Ignitor 2?

Will I need a new coil and wires if I do the conversion?

Thanks!
David

Hi ZDR,

I used the Crane Ignition system until it failed.  I bought a new one and it worked fine.  It still relies on the mechanics of the 051 distributor.  Switch to the 123 distributor and get state of the art electronics.  Never look back or worry.

On the 123 you need to remove the ballast resistor and upgrade the coil to 12v version.

I have used the Pertronix for about 3000 miles over three years.  Easy install, flawless performance, stock coil. Cheap.  A positive experience for me.

I have the Pertronix for the past 12 years. and 15K miles.

Not a glitch.

Still point & and necessary in the spare tire pouch incase there is a problem.

Thanks everyone, for the replies.  Does the Pertronix always have to be modified to fit or does it depend on the distributor?
