280SL 1968 -- 2 Fuses wiring ?
« on: January 06, 2016, 02:21:33 »
On the R/H side of the engine bay I have this little 2 fuses terminal bloc. I think it is part of the AC installation.
Any body has the wiring explanation and a picture?

And I had 2 wires connected on the air intake when I removed all. I suppose it is also for the AC?

Hi,
this additional fuse box was often used for the radio and motor antenna.

Thierry, In your second pic there are 2 wires hooked up to the cold start valve on the intake. There should only be ONE hooked up. The lower one you have connected is the proper one. It runs down and into the harness on the fender well. I don't know where that second one would go. It doesn't look to be factory. Does this car happen to have fog lights added? Could be your extras.

Looking at it again, hard to see, but there should be 4 short wires that come out of the harness and plug into the bottom of the voltage regulator (silver relay looking box) on fender well. you mentioned in another post the charging system was not working. the colors are blue, red, black, and brown. Anything else that doesn't disappear into the main harness is prob air conditioning and radio. looks like you have yellow wires going to a power antenna and radio.

Hi Tyler,
Thanks for your reply and picture, I will look this evening on the car.
There is no fog lights, radio yes but there was no electrical antenna. How ever there is the AC modification.
On your picture it looks far more clean than on mine.
I have to check all because the car has had a life before I get to buy her.... Goods (?) but a lot of bads for sure.
The yellow comes from the alternator, so probably for an other radio or similar, as the original is not working anymore...
I will remove all what is not from genuine, just keep the AC.
I check first what seems strange at rebuilding, and then will power and restart the car.
Last, hopefully see if the alternator is charging or not with the correct electrical connections.

Sounds like you have a good plan. Stick to putting it back to factory to start with. Then when its charging you can go back and sort out the AC. I think at some point there must have been a relay for AC installed there where the extra wires all congregate. Because there is an additional ground wire added to the body ground bolt which a relay would use. Im sure its long gone or maybe you have it. None the less a very common available part.

Tyler.
You are correct, AC will come after!! I didn't put back the box inside yet.
Engine first...
But you raised a point, I don't remember any relay that would work for the AC. I wonder if is necessary or if the control system deals without?
I'll see later.

It may have not had one. May have been just the fuse box. I believe the power for the AC is taken from that additional yellow wire from the alternator you have. Looking at other threads, this is how it was done when the ac systems were installed at the dealer. Good luck on the charging system ;)
