Glove box key blank needed for 230SL 1966
« on: March 30, 2015, 16:38:56 »
I have only one key for the glove box, but cant find a local key cutter who has a blank to copy it.    Does anyone know where to purchase a blank so I can get it copied please?

the existing key (which works fine) is stamped KV.  Ymos.

Many thanks

Paul.

Ebay has tonns of them, just search. However they may be expensive.
It may be worth looking in your neighborhood where there still exist a car key shop.
They may have a few blanks left to get you going.

Hi Paul,

If you have the same locks as my early 250SL then
I think you will find you need "Silca YM3 R"  blank, be careful as they are "handed" , so I assume the "R" is for Right.
A good locksmith should be able to order you a couple, and then cut them.

Good luck

thanks guys.  Been doing some digging.  I can buy one blank on Ebay for nearly £40, so decided to do some digging.  Found a place in Bournemouth which may be able to help and provide 2 fully cut keys for around £12. so will try them.

They need the key code which my data card says is KV  0 7 0  although the 0 is actually a blob rather than a zero (I think!)  So would the code be 070 or just 7.  Not sure.   He says he just types in the code and out comes a fully cut original set of keys.

I must not be understanding something about our keys --- If your keys MATCH your data card, and these keys Match the Locks in your car, you can just order a set of keys from your MB Dealer or the Classic Center and they provide cut keys from Ymos stock, etc.

I ordered two complete sets (ignition, door/fuel, trunk/glove) and provided proof of ownership and copy of my data card to the Classic Center and the keys they sent match my original keys --- YMOS etc.  If cost is the reason to buy blanks --- it should not be --- Pricing was very reasonable from Classic Center --- probably one of the cheapest items they offer for our cars --- cheaper then ebay blanks.

Would appreciate someone explaining what I am not understanding and why it would be better to buy blanks, or not buy from Classic Center or Dealer etc.

Thanks

That sounds a good idea. I didn't realise you could still get the original keys that easy. I was only going for a blank because I didn't know you can still get them that easy.  My 2000 clk Mercedes needed a new key and they told me I needed a complete new lock and new set of keys.  I will ring Mercedes in the morning and order one.

Hi Paul,

Let us know how you get on at your local M-Benz dealer.
Last year I asked my local dealer in Cardiff,  they said they were unable to help me, and suggested I try the local locksmiths.

We have three really specialist locksmiths here, and only one was able to help,
he recognise the pattern from his pattern books  and ordered & cut the blanks I previously mentioned for £10.
Thinking of you,  I passed his shop today, but Unfortunatly,  I think he is no longer trading.

Good luck

I called Tom at the California Classic Center --- he asked me to email ownership scan and data card scan --- that was it.  A week or 10 days later, the keys showed up in the mail.    This was about 6 months ago.

Again --- this only works if your locks still work with the original keys.

I would talk to Tom at Classic Center directly.  He works via phone or email.

The glovebox key code is generally stamped on the side of the lock and visible if you take the lock out of the glove box.  Note that some key blanks are NOT available from the classic center.  If MB can't provide it look up the key on key-men.com.  There is also a site in England that I bought keys from but the quality wasn't very good.

Found this company who claim to supply the UK classic Mercedes dealers.  I have ordered 2 pre-cut keys, exact replicas-  he tells me - for the total sum of £22 delivered.

Will let you know if they are any good.  He claims to be able to provide any Mercedes classic key - if you provide the details IE copy of the data card.
