Injection pump adjustment "ports"
« on: May 04, 2015, 21:26:27 »
Commenting on Pete's need to adjust to partial load on his pump brought back bad memories of removing the rear plate, oil running all over the place, trying to find the tiny little screws to make the adjustment, then putting the plate back on being sure not to bugger the big o-ring seal, going for a test drive, then doing it all over again because I went too far or not far enough.

I have been thinking for a while about this and I am finally going to try a little R&D and see if I can drill a couple of small holes in the rear plate that can be closed with grommets.  Then to make an adjustment, you would prise the grommets out, do your clicks on the adjuster, pop the grommets back in and be off on your test drive.  The holes would also help position the screwdriver.

I have a couple of spare pumps I can try this on.  Maybe I'll have a presento on this at PUB.

Cheers,

CT

But Chuck... I was under the impression that this adjustment is performed by removing the big hex in the center of the fuel injection rear plate (see pic attached) (?). Later type pumps had a plate fastened by screws in this position. Please comment.

Well, like I said, it's research and development.  I am going to check out my spare pumps tomorrow.  Thanks for your comment.

Mine has the big hex plug.  But I like the idea of a better access method for the later versions with the cover plate.  I should have made a clear cover to replace the start solenoid.  It would have mad adjusting the main rack MUCH easier.  Instead I just left it open and dealt with some mild oil loss.  Not ideal, but it worked.

Turns out that I have one of each type.  An R24 with a plain plate and a R18 with the giant screw plug.  Good luck trying to get that off with the pump in the car!

I think my idea could work with either type.
