Need to identify this part ?????
« on: May 05, 2015, 14:15:31 »
Hi Everyone,
I have taken pictures of everything I have taken off of my 280sl except for this part. I think I know where it goes, but I am hoping I am wrong. Yesterday, I put the heater blower, heat/air diverter and defroster vents back in. After that I went to the shelf to get the heater controls an saw the fabric piece pictured here. I think it goes behind the heater blower, but I am not sure. With my luck, I bet it is and if so, do I really need to put it back? What is it's function?
Thanks for helping me out.

This is firewall insulation, which from factory was installed on the "inside" (passenger compartment side) of the firewall in our Pagoda cars.
The material corresponds to the waffle pattern firewall padding visible in the engine compartment.
Purpose is heat and to some degree noise insulation.
Picture attached is passenger footwell (LHD car) /note borrowed Picture w arrow added/

Yes,
Hans is correct. :)
This is the insulation mat that goes behind/on top of the heater core. See the attached pic.

And yes also,
the material does not always correspond to the firewall padding surface. ;)
On my 1964 230 it was different. Both mats were factory original. Both materials are definitely NLA.

Loved to place original 51 year old parts back to the car whereever possible instead of stupidly replacing them with new/shiny aftermarket items.....

Just my 2 cents ...

Thanks guys, I appreciate the information...... Too bad I didn't find that piece of material before I put everything back in. So, I guess I will just suck it up and spend the next 2 plus days taking everything out to put the material on top of the heater core.
One last question: do you think it is that necessary to have it over the heater core???? >:(

Not sure what you mean with "over". The pad is glued to the firewall and sits "under" the heat exchanger. Perhaps this photo provides a better relation on its location.

Yes, I misspoke. I should have said behind the heater core. I really appreciate the help. Today, I get to take everything out again and and re-glue the pad back to the firewall. I bet I can beat the time it took me the first time, huh? LOL!
