I have just heard a claim on 230SL for sale ad that "Also not widely known, early cars (pre 1968) have a Fluid Coupling versus a Torque Converter in the transmission.   The Fluid Coupling has less power loss and a firmer shift sequence--- a Torque Converter has more "give" and a higher Stall Speed, resulting in a softer power delivery. "

I realize the transmissions are different in the earlier cars. I notice my 1970 280se actually starts off in 1st gear whereas the 230sl starts off in second. I can attest my 230sl transmission has a firmer shift sequence than the 280se.

Any other reflections on this viewpoint?

Hi,

To my knowledge, they are confusing the W113s with W108/W109/W111 cars.  Only the W108, W109 and W111 cars got the new version Aut. transmission with a torque converter when it became available around spring 1969. The 280 SL and 109 6,3 where produced until production end with the GA type transmission
and the Fluid Coupling and not a TC.
