back-up/neutral safety switch
« on: May 29, 2015, 19:43:27 »
At the present time my '67 will start with the shift lever in any position. The backup lights do not work and I have a switch for them. I had a manual at some point that showed how to adjust the cable to have these switches operate. It has been a few years and I cannot find that information.

Anyone familiar with this procedure?

Pick up a pair of those Teflon Shift Rod Bushings.  I had the same problem.  They are available from carpartsdiscount.com, Item #60552 for $4.35 each.  A quick test is put the car in Reverse and see if your back up lights are on but do this by moving the trans to Reverse from both Park and from Drive.  The lights should go out when you are not in Reverse.   If the lights aren't on while  in Reverse, or they stay on after removing the lever from Reverse into Park or Drive, then the shift linkage is not correctly positioned - likely caused by worn Shift Rod bushings.  This isn't always a good test - depending on the extent of the bushings wear or  condition, but it is a quick way to find out.   Also, note if there is any excessive play or looseness and stabiliity of the transmission shifter.  If it's real sloppy or loose as a goose, that's another indicator for worn bushings.  When you install the new bushings, heat them up in a coffee mug of hot water,  that will soften them up and allow them to pop in correctly.  Also, observe the orientation of the bushing.  One side has a larger diameter hole than the other side.  The transmission lever should insert into the bushing from the side with the smaller diameter hole.  Same with the lever of your shifter.  It should insert into the side of the bushing having the smaller diameter hole.  While you're in there, and if you have a lighted shift gate, you might want to change the light bulb.  I had trouble finding a source but did find the 12 Volt 3 Watt FESTOON bulb available from divinelighting.com, Part Number is EIKO DE-3021.  Otherwise, look for a 14 Volt, 0.24 AMP, 28mm x 7mm FESTOON bulb.

Good luck.
