280 SL Oil Pump

I bought this on a EBay. It was listed as fitting my car. It’s got a longer pick-up neck and no relief valve I see.  Do they not make the original style or did I receive the wrong type? 

I’ve also included my old one.

The insides of oilpumps  come in at least 3 different capacities measured by the width of its gears.

if the pump you bought has better gears you should be able to rebuilt your old pump with it.

if you replace your old housing , for a higher capacity one, use the new largercapacity oilpan to accomodate for the longer neck

Thanks for the info. I could probably swap pickup tubes.  I’m wondering if it’s a big deal not to have a relief valve. I live in Hawaii so I don’t have to worry about the oil getting too thick from cold temperatures.

Any thoughts?

I can tell the height of the pump gear is less than the old.  The old pump actually looks ok. I’ll just put it back in I guess.

The oil pump with the long neck might be from a 300SE. I've seen that sort of pump several years ago but I can't remember all of the details. I'm fairly certain that it's a much older version than the one with a pressure relief valve. Is there a part number on the pump?

if you decide to use your old pump you might want to ground the axial surfaces .these type of pumps loose capacity by wear sideways.

Yep.  I’ve thought about grinding it.  I don’t know if they grind aluminum though, it tends to gum up the wheel.  I do have a mill I could flywheel it.

Mr. Fiat confirmed it was the wrong pump and took it back.

I have a rebuilt one in my cache of parts (not trying to co-opt this into a “for sale” post)
