Power Steering Box - rebuild guide

Hi all,

I have a car which is partially in bits.  I am trying to understand how the power steering box goes back to together.  Is there a guide anywhere for this that I can be directed too?  I have the repair kit for the box but want to ensure I know how the thing goes back together before replacing the old seals with the new ones.

My query is mainly on the sequence of assembly of the parts.

Your power steering gear box is in pieces??
Well, it's not easy to re-assemble it properly again. You'll need some special tools.

There's no way assembling it back together without the aid of the big blue book (MB workshop manual). Go & get it.

Thanks Achim,

I believe I have managed to work it all out now,  The issue was the sequence of the assembly, I assembled it last night without any grease just to see if it would work and I believe I have got it all correct.  Putting the ball bearings back in the worm is the hardest part.  But I am a clock and watch repairer by trade so this isnt too bad...

Over the weekend I shall re-assemble with bearing grease and see how it goes.

I do have a big blue book workshop manual on old mercedes cars but didnt think it had much detail on the power steering box.  I best check and read it ...

Hi Steven ,

Be sure only to use ATF , assembly should turn very light and have a torque of max 0,08 Nm !!

The early BBB has the rebuild process. It is about 30 pages long!

You can also use Automatic Transmission assembly paste. One brand is "transgel". It will desolve in the power steering fluid after running it. Helps keep o-rings in place while assembling. Shouldn't use axle grease.

Steven, No ignorance, When I first came to this forum I kept wondering why they were referring to the "BBB". Is also a term for the book used by Alcoholics Anonymous.  ???  BBB is a term coined here "Big Blue Book". It's the Mercedes Factory Repair Manual. There are 2 versions applicable to our cars. First is 1959 to 1967. Second is 1968 onwards. Sometimes you need both as the later versions don't include some of the info the earlier versions do.

Ha ha I see now.

Luckily for me I already have a BBB but sometimes takes me a while to find the relevant sections to the 250SL as the book seems to cover many car variants. 

I will attempt to rebuild the box this week; at the weekend I checked the power steering pump.  It was pretty grimey inside, again may as well replace the seals on this also and clean it up.  I am looking to order my service parts from MBclassics.de.  They seem quite sensibly priced as well as popping into the SL shop here in the UK.
