Rear rubber trim on center chrome strip and tail lights
« on: August 22, 2015, 17:54:56 »
Can anyone advise how much of the rubber trim is supposed to be on the top of the tail lights? All around them on sides, or just top portion?  Have pictures of the center rubber trim, but not sure how much is on the tail lights.
Any pictures or advise appreciated.  My car is mid year 1969 280SL.
Thanks,
John

Not exactly sure what you are typing about. On the 280 SL there is a small rubber trim that fits on the top of the tail lights and also on top of the center chrome. This is intended as a seal, and is not present on the earlier cars. On my 280 SL, it shows about 3 mm. This is a separate piece (three pieces actually) of trim. Not sure who or if it is available.

On the 250 SL and 230 SL there is no rubber trim showing.

I have the trim on the center section, it is available now new, adjacent on chrome trim on either side trunk lock. What I need to know is what is on the top of the tail lights, is it the same trim?  And where does it run on the tail lights?  Only on top, or down the sides of them too?

The center chrome trim between the trunk lock has a lip for the rubber trim to mount on.  The tail lights do not have that lip, just a straight edge.  So may need a different kind of rubber trim there? New trim has a slot in it for the trim to attach on the center pieces, but does not fit the same on the tail  lights.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks
John

Hi John,
My car has the 280 type rear lights, and Maybe these help, you can just see top rubber/plastic strip at the top of the picture, it slightly curves round the side end.

Keep well

On my early '69 (build date July '68) there is only rubber showing around the center piece (trim for trunk/boot push button). No rubber on side pieces and no rubber gasket showing around the tail lights. They just fit flush up against the body.

Mine is June 1969 car, so have to assume it should have the rubber trim in back.  Just trying to find out what the trim is on the tail lights as it is not the same as the center pieces.
Anyone know if it is available?
Thanks,
John

The black trim for the rear chrome pieces between the taillamps and the trunk lock is available from Authentic Classics and also the taillamp rubber.
