Speedometer error from different rear end ratio......
« on: August 27, 2015, 05:33:24 »
The prior owner replaced the 3.92 rear end in my 1970 280 SL with a 3.27 ratio. While easier on the ears at high-speed, the speedo error is significant.   Can anyone tell me how to correct the error caused in the speedometer reading by the different rear end ratio?  Is there a gear available for the speedo drive that will compensate for the rear end change?

Hi and welcome!
I had my speedo's gear ratio changed to what they call "W = 12.4" to work with the 3.27.
Palo Alto Speedometer did it for me, but there are others who could probably do it. Check here: http://www.sl113.org/vendor-list.html

My Pagoda also has a 3.27, and I'm waiting for my corrector gearbox to arrive from the UK. These guys did it for about £100, you have to send them your current cable and mark where you want the box to be fitted, and tell them the ratio (mine was 13%, measured with a GPS unit). It took about 4 weeks in total. http://www.speedograph-richfield.com
