Wrong dipstick?
« on: October 14, 2015, 23:08:20 »
I was sorting the parts that I have removed and was looking at the dipstick noticed the stamped wording was 230/250/67. I take it that this is not the correct dipstick for my 280. It's amazing some of things that I'm finding on this car and I'm just only in the engine compartment.

Can you measure it and let me know I'll measure mine for you. Also is it your engine or transmission dip stick?

Cheers, Dieter

That would be an engine oil dip stick.

James, Good one.  I had to Google it and re-read the posts but then again I am just a castaway.

There are two ways to do this:  The first is to measure the dipstick AND the dipstick tube. My M-130(280SL) dipstick tube is almost exactly 16" from the oil pan to the top of the tube.  The stick is 18-3/4" and 20" from the underside of the hilt where if meets the dipstick tube to the High and Low lever marks respectively.

The second is to do an oil change adding the listed capacity of oil, start the engine to fill the filter, shut it off and compare the oil level on the dipstick to the level marks.

There are several version W113 engine dipsticks, depending on the engine type and oil pan.

The blade measured 11 3/4 inches or 298MM. The engine is a 130.983 which is the engine for the 280 SL which I got off of the left side of the block.. I noticed though the Head has a stamp that says 280SE/L.

You will see here in the Tech Manual that those designations are for the late 280SL 130 engine head.

That's good news since I was thinking that something wasn't on the up and up. I still hunting for the dipstick answer.

If your dipstick tube is 16" from the oil pan to the top you have the wrong dipstick.
