SHIFTER Bushing Play
« on: October 21, 2015, 02:04:01 »
230sl Manual....just put new motor mounts and trans mount in. At 4000rpm and above the stick shift is vibrating making noise. I can pull the stick up and down 1/8 of an inch with a definite clunk/tap each time I pull it up/down. Is that too much bushing play and the reason the thing is vibrating at high RPM? Thanks.

Yep, that is too much play.  Most likely culprit is the clamshell bushing that keeps the ball at the base of the shifter.  It is a fairly easy fix, but while you are in there you should also replace the bushings on the connecting rods.  There is plenty of detail in the threads, good luck!
