1969 280 SL exhaust

I am looking to find out where i can get this piece of exhaust. Someone on here once told me you must have this piece for the engine to run right. I was just going to replace with two new sections of pipe. However i would like to know where i can source this piece. Photos attached. Would appreciate a bit of insight on this and whether is is necessary.

You can obtain the part from your local MB dealer.

Those are the two front pipes, which include the exhaust gas cross-over.  Those are the most difficult to replace.

Joe,
If it was a right hand drive car you can get the part separately from the front pipes and if you are handy with the welder you could weld the new section to the old front pipes.

Yes, that part is needed for scavenging purposes. More power and less loud.

Can't you just buy the scavenger piece alone without the two front pipes, surely someone must make the part. those front pipes look like they would be a nighmare to remove. and is there an aftermarket place that sells pieces. I really don't like doing business with the Mercedes dealers in BC

Talk to the local hot rod guys - there is probably someone close by who could weld you up a facsimile

Hi, you still around. What did you do when you fixed your exhaust a couple years ago. I've been chatting to a welder friend of mine, he thinks he may be able to replicate that. I may cut that out and take it with me when I go over to Abbotsford at end of month. Having to buy the whole piece with the two pipes from the engine back is a lot of work and probably would have to remortgage my home in order to buy it from Three Point Motors and they move about as fast as cold molasses. From  what I can ascertain from inspecting the piece it looks like the exhaust gasses just flow back and forth between the two sides of the unit therefore sort of acting like a collector in a high performance system. Basically it is a chamber where the exhaust from the two separate pipes from the engine can mix and balance and then exit to the resonator and th n on to the rear muffler. Would like you know your solution for when you did yours. Thanks, Carey

Bonnyboy's suggestion is a good one.  The hot rod crowd uses a Crossover/BalanceTube to dampen the sound waves and it also helps with low end torque development.   Summit Racing offers a kit that may give your welder friend a 'Head Start"

Depending on your budget, would it not make more sense to replace the exhaust? I had 2 holes in the same place and got tired of patching the exhaust up, as the rust and heat take their toll, the exhaust frays in new places around the welds. I eventually replaced it with a stainless steel exhaust which will outlive me....

If you plan on keeping the car why not just invest your time an money into a stainless steel exhaust.

Hi, I just saw the picture of your SL in the Pagoda notes. Beautiful looking car and I like your auxillary lights on the front bumper. I got some exhaust parts out of Autohaus AZ for my 69. I had the parts delivered to my friends at Indio, Calif this winter. That sandwich piece I wanted is only available if you buy the two header pipes. I will be welding in a balance pipe between the two pipes like we do on muscle cars to lower the decibels and balance the different banks on a V8.
