280SL 1968 Shut off solenoid or Idle increase solenoid?
« on: January 17, 2016, 02:32:39 »
Starting the engine after 2 years working party, I have a big gasoline leakage at the solenoid on the air intake.
I found that the solenoid is working properly on the table, but not energized on the car.
I don't know which Item it is on the wiring: 59 or 51????

All the fuses are correct, but can't figure out which relay and where, either???

And then, is that solenoid suppose to be sealed or installed dry on the air intake blanking?

Actually I have inhibited this function and it runs perfect. Just have to hold idle at start for a few minutes!

Thanks
Thierry

Thierry, sounds like there are a few issues. Did you remove that extra wire that was connected to the solenoid. The one we spoke about on your a/c thread? There should be only one wire coming from the passenger side wheel well harness to that solenoid. The solenoid is only energized DURING CRANKING. If its engergized all the time, somthing is wired wrong. If in doubt leave the wires disconnected for now untill you get other things worked out. Yes the solenoid and cold start valve both use o-rings to seal to the intake. If they are missing you will have a vacuum leak. If it hasnt run in a few years you may have a stuck WRD plunger, is why you need to hold the throttle untill the engine warms up. Search the forum for "Stuck WRD"

Tyler,
Yes, now there is only one wire. I took out the one of the A/C.
The solenoid is working off the table, but there is never 12v at the wire left.
Which item is it: 51 or 59 on the wiring?
And then, when i follow the wiring, if I can see the relay on the wiring, but I don't know how to locate it on the car?

Just found in the Technical Manual some very good informations on the CSV.
So it seems normal that there is no 12V at the solenoid because the local tempearture is around 30C...
I need to check better and the valve installation, as she should be closed when the solenoid is not energized!!!!
And mine leaks!!!
I'll check and let you know.

If the intake starting valve leaks fuel externally, the problem is usually, a bad o-ring seal under the electric solenoid.

Thierry, Here is a diagram from another member of the valve and solenoid disassembled. Note the o-ring on the solenoid. There is and additional large o-ring on the valve body where the whole thing bolts to the manifold with the 3 hex screws. evan with the o-rings missing you should not be getting a fuel leak with the key just in the on position. The valve seat or pintle may be damaged or frozen. Double check and make sure that spring is in there too.
