fog lights

i have a 1970 280 sl. i would like to put fog lights on it.
My question is did they ever come with factory fog lights or are the an after market addition.
in addition do you drill the bumper to mount them. Not sure i want to do that??
what brand was commonly used.

One can fit them by means of self-made bent brackets; to avoid making the holes

Hi Hans,
I have never seen extra lights mounted with bent brackets to a Pagoda. There is not much space to do this.
Do you have any pictures showing this? Where are the brackets mounted?

I did not find many photos in my files showing details for the fog lights mount...   Attached is one pic, I believe from a German website.

I traded in a set of period correct fog lights to Gernold.  They are like new and are in excellent condition.  If you are interested give him a call.

I prefer the lines of the Pagoda front just as Geiger/Bracq designed it... As a matter of fact I think these extra lights, that were very commonly seen on the front of all types of automobiles in the sixties/seventies, stemmed from harsh reality... The fact that lighting units on cars in those days were not very bright/efficient. Thus, people chose to enhance their cars.
Personally, I have fitted more modern H4 bulbs into my headlights which gives a more adequate beam.

Wow - isn't this topic relevant today.

I just came in early to the office and ordered a new set of Hella driving lamps from Amazon.  We have lots of low lying fog in the valley and these really help out the vision especially at dawn or dusk.   I wasn't happy last week driving in it - sort of like soup.

Initially I was just looking for covers for my old Bosch lights but once you buy the covers and factored in shipping and then a new relay and switch which went AWOL along with the wiring which I pulled long ago - it was cheaper to buy a complete new set from Amazon - with free shipping and no duty charges to get up here to Canada.

I bought the HELLA 005750952 500 Series 12V/55W Halogen Driving Lamp Kit  - $104 CAN so should be able to find it for $65 USD

Hi,

the reason those HELLA 005750952 are so much cheaper is because they do not have the classic chrome backing.

When designing mounting options, make sure they are stable… there is nothing worse than wobbling or vibrating high beams.

I have them on my car… but I need the light for rallying. I mounted them in the holes left by the bumper overriders which I removed. No drilling required. Downside… they are a little too close to the center.
