Exhaust pipe chrome muffler tips

Need to put a new rear muffler in. Can I remove my existing chrome tips, or are they welded on. I'd like to attach them to the new muffler, as they are in great shape. Any info appreciated. Thx.

Normally they are just a friction fit. Rust makes them impossible to remove sometimes. Try warming them up all around with a propane torch, then try  to tap them off with a flat drift. Do not use so much heat that you dis-color the chrome.

An air hack saw is great for this job.
Cut off the tail pipes and then cut two slots the full length of the inside the remainder of the tailpipes, opposite each other. This will allow you to collapse what remains of the tail pipes and liberate the chrome tips for re-use without damage.

I assume an air hacksaw is not the same as an air guitar?
I have been known to wander around the garage looking for a spanner miming using it but an air spanner has yet to actually loosen any nuts. Well, not of the metal variety :o

Perhaps it's a qualified/experienced mechanic thing ;)

felix, I am missing your point. What are you trying to say?

Also, I've not seen any exhaust tips that look like those. But, I'm mainly a 280 SL guy... not a 230.

Felix,

I agree with Mark. These are not MB tips.

As Joe said, the MB ones are friction fit. They have indentations so have yo be knocked on to the tail pipes.
Very difficult to remove once on, hence the suggestion to hacksaw the inner tail pipes in order to reuse them.

Felix, your muffler is installed up side down. The flat metal strap should be upward to provide a surface for the rubber bump stop. Also notice that your muffler is rubbing against the body sheet metal. It will wear a hole in the metal body of the car if it is left that way. Your tail pipes may also be contacting the bumper metal to metal since the rubber bump stop is not functioning.
