shift problems

i have a problem w/ the shifting on my 65 4sp all of a sudden my 1st to 2nd shift has become very vauge, to the point of a couple times, having to stop, go back to 1st and start over. have searched for "shift bushings" and got some good pictures, and how to access the shifter itself, and the bushings and the ?black rubber? that it fits into. how to access the rest of the bushings? can this all be done from the top of car, or does trans have to come out? thanks, bob

Its most likely the bushings at the front end of the rod. If you peel back the carpet there is an access plate on the trans tunnel, literally under the dash at the bulkhead end. This allows easy repair from inside the car !
