Where can you get locks repaired or replaced 1970 280SL
« on: March 29, 2016, 02:11:44 »
Gentlemen I recently joined the Group. I purchased a 280SL ,1970. Is there a source to repair or replace door locks>?? obviously I would like all locks to work with same key so I would need to recode ignition, glove bow, trunk and doors. As a stop gap I replaced the trunk lock.
Any insight will be appreciated

Bryan, Have a look at this thread regarding re-keying all locks to 1 key. The gas cap cannot be re keyed unless it is a Ymos cap so you would want to re-key the rest of your locks to match it. Another alternative would be to order replacement keys and a gas cap using the key code on your data card and then have the locksmith replace the tumblers on mismatched locks to match. This would bring the car back to the way it was when it left the factory.  A good locksmith should be able to take care of your lock repair/rekey. Find someone who specializes in automotive locks.

I posted this guy's name in another thread. He did all my W111 and W128 locks. Not the cheapest, but knows his stuff and has MB parts.

I agree with the previous posts that the car comes with 3 original keys. I took my VIN to the dealer and bought 3 original keys (steel). The ignition key is much longer than the others. So, I doubt if all 3 keys can be re-keyed into one because it won't work for the ignition. It is possible that the doors, trunk, glove compartment and the gas cap keys can be combined into one key, but it won't be steel key.

Zalsaigh, the OP has a 280sl. These were originally shipped with a 1 key system that did all locks on the car. There was an additional key "valet" that worked only the drivers door and ignition switch.
The 3 key system you have was on the 230sl and 250sl models. An Ignition key, a door/gascap key, and a glovebox/trunk key.

If your car is indeed a 1970, that is manufactured after July 1969, then it should have already a 1-key system for everything. Only 230SL, 250SL and early 280SL cars came with a 3-key system.
The graphic on this site explains the situation quite well: http://www.sls-hh-shop.de/en/230-280SL-W113/72-Door/89-Locking-System/
I believe you can get complete 1-key lock sets from the Classic Center.
