Get you out of trouble spares
« on: April 23, 2016, 18:06:18 »
I wondered if and or what small spares members might carry with them, particularly on long trips to get them out of trouble ?
Are there any items that seem to be more problematic than others from members experiences.
Any feedback would make interesting reading for many i'm sure.

I carry belts,  oil and points.  So far I have only needed belts and it was when I did not have one with me at the time.

Here is a nice string from a number of years back, good advice then and good advice still

I used the main search function - click on the "Search" between "Technical Manual" and "Admin" not the one at the top right (that one only searches the forum you are currently reading) - my search string was, spare -tire, limited to only topics

In one of Ger's brochures, called "Reisen mit Mercedes-Benz Fahrzeugen" ("Touring in Mercedes-Benz Vehicles"), there are descriptions of "Spare Parts Travel Assortments" for each model of M-B and a "Breakdown Emergency Kit", with brief but not complete descriptions of what comes with each "assortment" or kit.  This thread and an earlier one gave me the idea of trying to re-create the breakdown emergency kit and the W113 "Spare Parts Travel Assortment" with up-to date parts/equipment, and I am curious if any member has seen these kits or assortments and can help describe the contents and container.  As can be seen in the attached pages, the brochure has pictures of these items, but it is hard to tell exactly what is shown in the pictures.

Well, where are you taking this long trip?  In heavily developed countries where mobile and internet service is available, the solution is usually a phone call (and expensive bill) away.  The best bet is to have the car well sorted at home and then treat it with respect on the road.

Thanks for all the replies, some of the items i already carry some i will be getting. The string from a number of years back was interesting also, laughed at the crack about swatting flies ! It's not a particular long trip that i had in mind, six to seven hundred miles is probably the longest done so far, only had the Pagoda a year now. The AA and RAC are the biggest breakdown / recovery services in the UK and the real reason for my question was, if you break down and need a troublesome part replaced the chances are that the breakdown service will not carry parts for our cars which then means you have to be towed to somewhere who can fix it, breaking up the trip for possibly a day or two, whereas if you carry a small selection of troublesome parts the breakdown man could replace the part and you could carry on with your journey with only a small delay.
