Mystery part found in a pile of Mercedes part. Is it from a Mercedes??

My friend George has been going through his garage which is filled with 60's and 70's Mercedes Benz parts. He asked me what this part was? (see attached).

I do not have the answer for him. 

I'm sure what it is or even if it is from a Mercedes or german car. 

Can anyone identify this mystery part? And if its not Mercedes part please forgive me for posting the question here

It looks like an underdash cover, based on the shape and the lips where the screw holes are. As to the model, to answer is tricky. Any stamps, writing or stickers o it?

No this one still remains a mystery to this day. Uncertain what its from.

That looong lip on the top left is throwing me off. Everything else speaks Mercedes-Benz.

Part of it looks like the panel on the B-pillar. Perhaps a home made one?
This panel is also a bit wider on very early 230SL.

Is it covered with vinyl type material?

I've worked on just about every model MB from 170S to 560SL and it doesn't look like a MB part I've ever seen. If it was, it would very likely have a part number on it.
