Different seat sizes
« on: March 04, 2016, 02:10:54 »
I'm aware that there are 2 different seat sizes.  Can anyone tell me the 2 different sizes for the front seats?

I have an early 1964 so it should have the smaller ones but trim was re-done many years ago so I'm not sure what size I actually have.

Thanks for any help...

I don't have an exact measurement, but from VIN 2927 the seat bottoms have the bulge toward the door (at the front of the seat) and are no longer interchangeable side to side. The early seats, to VIN ending 2926, are narrower at the front and are interchangeable side to side. There is an in-depth article (by Achim) in the next issue of Pagoda World, which as at the printers as I type. This has pictures and a table listing all the seat changes during the production of the 113 cars.

Agree with what Jon said. :)
There are more differences than just the chrome trim and the bulge of the seat cushion among the five seat types. :o
The all-deciding aspect is (or should be) your VIN.
See the article that ... ER ... I wrote in the next PagodaWorld.
I am afraid the bottom line would be you've to become a full member first...
 :o
Anyway ... it is not unusual that something on the seats was exchanged over the years.  :-X Especially owners of "earlier 230ies" of "driver quality" tended to replace their old seats with more recent seat types because of head-rests of stiffer back rest or advanced reclining mechanisms if they were available.
However, it was never easy to get hands on a decent set of (replacement) seats from a parted-out car...

Better keep the original and go the repair route.
It will be hard to do so without the proper parts list (or the EPC). If you have none of those, you should have a good (MB) dealer on your hand. But even with ... parts availability - especially for the early both seat types (seat types 1 and 2 among the total of 5) is pretty limited. :-[

Good luck

Hello 320CE,

Certainly you have got seat type 2, the one with the small incline adjustment wheel. Pretty common seat (until serial no. 012466).

See picture (not mine).

Good luck,

Thanks so much for the information.  The seats are currently in storage as the car is getting the rust removed, but I'll check my seats look like the one you posted. If not I'll try to find a way to bring them back to the original setup.

so ... here are my seats.  looks like the frame is correct to the car but I think the padding is a little tired and the seat looks a little out of shape.  I this the correct size for the car?

As a Associate Member and not a Full Member ($30p.a.) you will not receive the twice yearly Pagoda World and thus not see the articles on the seats fitted across the years to the Pagoda. You may want to consider joining as a Full Member. This will also give you full access to the Tech Manual and such things as the Linkage Tour and the electrical diagrams.

Meanwhile do a search on seat noodles and you will see lots written up on how you can improve the seats by fitting part Pool noodles in under the seat cushions.  If the seats will clean up ok this can add years to their life and make them much more comfortable to sit in both for driver and passenger.

The information in Pagoda World is not electronically available on the site (another topic for another day). But back issues of Pagoda World are available. Post a note to GarryM (which in essence we are doing with this thread) and he can get the process started.

Hello 320,

(Pls, have you got a real name too?)  ???

This is clearly seat type 1. The seat cushions left and right are identical and not left-handed vs. right handed. Or, the small seat cushions so to speak. So, your car should have a serial below 002927 or something had been mixed up in the past.

That works somehow but is only a temporary fix. Better is to get the spring cushions renovated at a professional shop. Furthermore, the rubber-horsehair pads get tired with the years (decades) and need to be replaced or filled up (with the same material).
Creating comfortable (& stiff) seats out of worn ones is not an easy job - and pricey.
Ask me how I know.
However, on the long term it's well worth the investment. Better (for your ride & enjoyment quality) than chrome and paint.

Your seat cover(s) look definitely replaced.
If I were you .... ok, I am not ... but IF I were allowed to be you...
take care of the body (and rust) work now and more important technical issues first.
Your seat(s) look definitely good enough to keep the interior for a couple of further years.
A temporary fix with pool noodles might do the job for the time being;
once you have convalesced from the body fix ($$$) you might go and invest the next ($$$) into the interior.

Good luck,

Achim

Colin

Have seen your Full Membership joining info and will post out a Welcome package with the Pagoda World No.18 that has some seat info in it.

Meanwhile, on the seat noodles, I had my seats overhauled and still put in the seat pool noodles to stiffen up the seat edges.  I find that it makes the seat much firmer on the edges and stops the sagging.  They have been in there 5 years and still going fine.

Interesting discussion on the different option codes.  Have you had a chance to look at your rear axle number that is stamped in the axle housing?

I was under the car today looking at the axle number while I was re installing the fuel pump! ... but didn't write it down.  I'll do it next weekend.  The car has had all the rust taken out of it and mechanically its pretty close too. Lots of dints and a crap paint job to fix up but I'll leave that for a while. Needed to know the seat type so I can order in the leather seats and trim.
Thanks for everyone's input... and for the welcome package that will come too.
