Rear axle done
« on: May 20, 2016, 22:47:34 »
Just finished my rear axle teardown and rebuild.  The paint is a 2 part epoxy coating(primer) from Southern Polyurethanes.  The owner of the company found out people were using the black primer as a topcoat on Hemi Cuda's etc so he re-formulated it to include UV protection.  When I was painstakingly mixing paint and re-creating the assembly line markings I couldn't help thinking there was a former Mercedes worker in the great beyond laughing his ass off that I was spending hours recreating something they probably didn't give a second thought to.

Great work.  Do you have any photos or description of the process?

Harry,
Unfortunately I don't have much.  Halfway through I thought that I should have taken more pictures and recorded all the parts numbers I used.  I have another (3.69?) in the attic I was thinking of going through.  If I do I will document it.

Looks fantastic. and your workbench and view out of the window looks like the ultimate man cave / garage. Reminds me to cleanup my garage right now its such a mess.

I am not known for clean workbenches but I did manage a clean 6 feet out of 17.    The windows are a reaction to my workplace.  I work in the engine room of a ship every other month where I have 2 tiny windows.  When I built the back of the garage I knew windows were in the plan.

Its on my to do list to build another garage. I have my 1971 Riviera that I painted last year parked outside. I hate it when it rains.

Harry,

There are a great many posts about rear axle rebuilds on the site; it's a vast mine of info on this subject. Some provide very detailed commentary.
