i have been trying to get get a decent idle idle out of my 66" 230SL, but in doing so I feel I may have gone too far, I have been turning the idle adjustment knob on the backside of the FI pump but now I feel I have gone way out of the original spec.  Does anyone know what the starting point should be for this adjusting screw? (IE x number of clicks from a fully bottomed position)  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do the split linkage test during idle.

There is no "starting point" per se. Every car is set up slightly different. As Joe suggested do a split linkage test to confirm if you are running lean or rich. Then go and adjust your FIP idle knob and air screw accordingly. Make sure the engine is at operating temp otherwise you will be countering the WRD (warm running device).

Idle timing depends on the distributor in your car. Post the Bosch #.  Otherwise make sure the vacuum cell on the dist. is working and set the timing at 3,000 rpms. at 30degrees BTDC.  Most of us like to go up to 35-38 degrees BTDC depending on the fuel octane.

I run my 051 distributer in my 250 at 35 deg advance. Had it set at 38 briefly and would get an occasional ping. Every car is a bit different in what it can handle. Be sure to use 91 octane.

On the 051 leave it connected while setting the timing above 3000 rpm's. It is a vacuum retard system that only functions at idle.
