Rust blocking the fuel pump filter

I have an late short style fuel pump that has lots of rust debris in the intake filter. I can't get the filter out...  It feels like it has had the bolt/filter loktited in??
Tried putting it in a vice etc but worried I'll damage the aluminium if I try too hard to get it out.
So...  Can I run petrol trough the pump in reverse to flush the rust out of the filter by reversing positive and negatives?  Or will this risk damaging the pump?

They are always on very tight. An impact gun makes short work of removing it. Haven't damaged one yet.
You might want to pull your fuel sending unit and inspect the inside of your tank if your getting enough rust to plug up the pump inlet screen. There is also a screen in the bottom of the fuel tank that is part of the drain plug.

Your right ... an impact wrench does the trick nicely.  Cleaned and back on the car...
