Aussie Pagoda prices
« on: August 06, 2016, 08:40:56 »
In an idle moment today I had a browse through carsales.com.au (as you do) to check out the prices of Pagodas - nearly fell off my chair when I found  three 280s for close to $200k, and two 230s for low $100ks.

I know I haven`t looked for a while but but geeze louise - whats happened? I thought my insurance value was ok but nowhere in the ball park at these prices.

George,

That is the asking price, still got to get it but certainly $150,000 is becoming the norm.  Shannon’s did a revaluation on my car and put $175k on it.  It is crazy, and one of the reasons that now stops me from just parking my car anywhere and using it so much. I purchased a new town house because it has a garage, my old one didn’t, and I now have somewhere to lock my car up when I have it in Melbourne.

I paid (lets just say) well over 100k for a manual 280sl recently and I think I got it pretty cheap. It wasnt close to 200 but it was not that close to 100 either.

Did anyone see the LHD one that was on carsales for a few hours before it sold? It was 59k.. french delivery. Needed a lot of love but sold as soon as it went on.

Supply and demand. There are not that many good quality RHD Pagodas available in Australia. But as mentioned asking price and what is actually achieved are two different things. Those cars have been on that website for months, prices are too high...... at the moment!

The Blue one would by my pick based on the photos.. it's hard though because I could take photos that would make mine look concourse but it would be disappointing on inspection (in a relative sense).. I'd love to inspect these cars and see what sort of quality they are.. if some of them are as good as they look I would have thought they would be worth 150k all day.

I agree re the blue one - perhaps I`m biased as its identical to our car.

I admit to not being a member of the Hanrahan.........we`ll all be rooned....bridage re prices. I see it as being a benefit to our hobby - in some way we are being paid to enjoy doing something that we really enjoy and when we decide its time to end our involvement in the hobby, either through age/infirmity or other interests, we have a nice return on our initial investment. There are downsides of course - Gary mentioned the worry about damage , then there is cost of insurance and the cost of spares being dragged up with the overall price.

My other hobby is boating - this is the reverse - we have a largish boat and when we come to sell, we will rationalise the loss of a big chunk of our initial investment by saying that cost was value for money because of the enjoyment it gave us. Hmmm, maybe the Pagoda is paying for the boat................I`ll try and run that logic with my wife and see how far I get. Worth a try as she enjoys the Pagoda as much as I do.

Cheers

George there seems to someone in Brisbane who's pretty quick to snap up half-decent Pagoda's at a reasonable price. He beat me to one a year ago. It seems it's not enough to say to say to someone "don't seel it -I'm buying it, I will call you back after you send me the photo (engine, etc) to agree the price." Twice now I have missed cars within hours because someone took a leap of faith and sent a payment or turned up with cash. Not even the courtesy to call me. >:(

Rob,

I had that several times when looking at RHD ones in the USA about 5 years ago,  I just could not get the money there quick enough and they went to Malaysia on three occasions it occurred.

I tell my wife that values have gone up so much on the Pagoda i now have enough to buy a VW Splitty bus. Then to make it difficult prices on those have gone up so much that I have enough equity to restore the bus, then buy another.  Not enough to get another Pagoda, I can still leave my VW Splitty on the street without much fear of it getting nicked....

I dont know about you guys but my car is on club rego.. $94 a year to register it, no CTP. Comprehensive insurance is $550 a year and it's insured for what I paid for it (deep in the 6 figures).

The Australian government are typically not progressive thinking but I have to admit, with classic cars they offer a pretty decent deal.

I am on club plates for 45 days p.a. at this point which I can extend a further 45 days although for the past couple of years, 45 days has been enough.  Cost $60.  Comprehensive Insurance with Shannons for $175k for an annual cost of $340.

I think the whole deal is good for collectors. No limits on the number of cars.

Hey Gary - don`t be so confident re the safety of the split - remember the $200K split in Sydney a year or so ago..........
