Gents,

Anyone with a suggestion or procedure of bringing down photos to the proper size for posting on this site?  I typically shoot on my digital camera at the lowest setting which yields files about 1 MB in size.  I do have Adobe Photoshop and when I try to bring them down to 80K to post they just lose way too much detail.  Since the photos I see seem from others seem to be OK, what resolution and pixel sizing should I use?  Clearly I'm doing something wrong.  Any  ideas?

In Adobe Elements there's a setting to "Save for the web". I assume  Photoshop has a similar setting.

Before saving, I reduce the larger dimension of the image to about 750 pixels if I want the image to be big enough to see detail...if the image does not need a large view, I might reduce the larger side to 450 pixels.

I also use Adobe Element's "medium" resolution when saving since computer images don't need to be as fine as a printed image.

The combination of reduced size and medium setting when 'Saved for the Web' results in a jpg of maybe 35kb up to 65kb for the larger sizes.

If you look at the shots I've saved as "Admin" or in my other hat as "280SL71" I think you will see that they are quite acceptable in clarity, size, and detail.

That worked great! In Photoshop select "File" then "Save for Web" then just size it down like Richard suggests below.

Gotta do one more.

Those are photos I shot at the Barrett Jackson auction in Scottsdale last January. Brian Peters of Motoring Investments completely restored that 280 including a nicely detailed that engine bay and sold it at auction there.

If you first email the photo to yourself you will notice it has allready reduced in bites.

Thanks for all the advice.

1)  Emailing to myself didn't work.  Windows used to ask me if I wanted to resize the photos smaller; it does not anymore.

2)  Tried resetting to 640x480 @75dpi, but on large files it lost way too much detail.

3)  Tried "saving for Web" and it took my 1MB file only to 400K.

4)  The jpeg resizer seemed to work well; the files that I had were about 1mb in size and it took them to 60K and I think they look OK.  I posted them under the seat belt post and I think they are acceptable for your viewing...

Clearly there are some ways to do it in Photoshop that I have to play with.  But the resizer seemed to do the trick and now it's on my computer.

opem image in photoshop
then go to:
Image
Then Image siz; a window will open
go to resolution at the bottom and set it at 50 pixels/Inch
Then save as.. (and give it a new name in order to keep the original.
Another window will open, save it as quality 5 or 6

This should bring your photo of say 1.2Mgb to 60/80K
