In Adobe Elements there's a setting to "Save for the web". I assume Photoshop has a similar setting.
Before saving, I reduce the larger dimension of the image to about 750 pixels if I want the image to be big enough to see detail...if the image does not need a large view, I might reduce the larger side to 450 pixels.
I also use Adobe Element's "medium" resolution when saving since computer images don't need to be as fine as a printed image.
The combination of reduced size and medium setting when 'Saved for the Web' results in a jpg of maybe 35kb up to 65kb for the larger sizes.
If you look at the shots I've saved as "Admin" or in my other hat as "280SL71" I think you will see that they are quite acceptable in clarity, size, and detail.
