Fuel pump pressure? What should it be? 230. 66.
« on: August 24, 2016, 16:03:49 »
The other day i stopped the car (230SL 1966) on a very steep hill, front upwards.  After 10 mins tried to restart which is never a problem, wouldnt start.

Bottom line, no fuel getting up to the injectors.  Eventually after leaving ignition on for 10 mins it started instantly.  I think the pump (original - trying to keep original) might be a bit weak.  Will also think about putting a one way valve as near to the engine as possible. I did service the pump a while ago but it is 50 now so might be getting a bit weak! Tank was about 60% full.

I want to check what pressure the pump is giving.  What should it be please?

thanks.... Paul.

I believe the pressure should be at least 10 psi. Someone will correct me on this if it's wrong.  In addition to the pressure you should check your volume, preferably at the return line where it enters the fuel tank.  You should get about 1 litre every 15 seconds.

Look for 12 to 15psi fuel pressure.

Also, before you condemn a pump, pinch off the return line while watching gauge with pump running. If the pressure rises any amount the pump is just fine. The pressure regulator could be at fault. Spring gets weak.
