Need help on color question
« on: September 16, 2016, 22:25:57 »
I have a question regarding the color of my 69 US spec Pagoda. The car was ordered by the Winston-Salem NC M-B dealer for a local resident. The order was placed in 1968, but by the time the car was built, it was October and he was told that it would be registered as a 69 model in the US. The color he requested was 460 (dark red brown) which was a color that was available in the US in 1968. However, it was not available in the US as a 69 color according to the color charts that I have seen. My question is how can I find out how many 69's were made in that 460 color? I called the classic center in Calif., and they could not come up with an answer. I was hoping someone in this group could give me some direction as to getting an answer.   Thanks in advance.

Barry,

IAW the rest of the world there were no cars with the colour 460G made in 1969 as MB had ceased production of the colour at the end of 1968.  Only in the USA where they try to manipulate/mix up the year of manufacture with the year of first registration will you have a “1969” vehicle with a 1968 colour.

The other problem you have of course is that there does not appear to be any recorded numbers built  by colour stats kept, only numbers built by year (again not US year of first registration).

Not much help to you trying to find out how many were registered in the USA in that colour in 1969.

Manfred Luft, the ex-president of the German Pagoda Club, was able to obtain some numbers on paint color selection but only for the total of all  "small series"  cars (= Kleinwagenserie; W111 + W113). In 1963 32 cars were painted in DB 460 and in1964: 81 cars.
For later years he found only cumulative statistics for total passenger car production. For years 1966 - 70 about 0.3 - 0.4% of all cars were painted each year in DB 460. (460 was used after 1968 on other types but no longer on W113)

Thanks guys for the info. I may never know the actual number of 460 US 69's. but is should be a small number indeed.

Yes, Barry,
I agree.
How important is that really? Whether there were 3 or 5 or 25 built with the paint code 460 _after_ October 1968, how important is that? :o
It doesn't make your car any more valuable than it already is.

Just respray your car in the original datacard code 460 (if necessary) or keep it as is (in 460) and fine.
Beautiful color BTW.
