Automatic Transmission Making Some Noise
« on: September 18, 2016, 20:34:52 »
Hello,

Just another issue on the way to make my car drive in a civilized way. I found no similar topic as I searched the Forum. Please kindly help:

When starting the car from a standstill forward I hear from time to time a noise, lasting about 1 second as I press the accelerator pedal. It does not occur always, particularly when the car has been running for quite a while, when you start on even surface, I do not hear it. It hapens always and may last up to two seconds when the car starts up the hill - bigger load to the system. I have never heard it when starting on reverse, but, just realized it now, I never pressed the pedal on reverse the way I do starting forward - usually on reverse you just let the brake go a bit and the car starts rolling...

The transmission works just fine - shifts up and down as it should - no slips, no clunks, smooth gear changes, kick down ok.

When I installed this transmission in the car I changed oil and replaced the filter. After about 2000km, when I first heard the noise, I changed the oil and filter again, just in case. The filter was clean, the oils was nicely red and nicely smelling.

It is a high tone squeeking noise. The transmision is for 280SL, with steel converter. No leaks, clean floor.

How big a problem do I have?

I think I have the same issue. Occasionally, there is a half a second long "squeak" when starting from standstill. It's almost like a squeaking fan belt, but I'm quite sure it's not a belt. The squeak noise is always the same.

I haven't been able to relate to anything else, other than the noise being more frequent when the car is warm.

Any ideas?

Well, mine is a little less frequent when my car is warm  ;D. Jokes aside - it sounds exactly like my issue.... The belt squeeking is a good comparison.

I had very limited time to look into this myself over the last couple of weeks. My mechanic came to my garrage to fix something else, but I asked him to look into this one as well. What he reported back was that this noise may be the metal sheet, the exhaust screen, vibrating and touching another piece of metal sheet somewhere there. He said he adjusted it.

I had a chance to drive the car for 15 minutes and it seemed to me that vast part of the noise vanished. I will double check and if this was the reason I will come back to you with more precise description.

For update: we took a closer look underneath the car. The heat screen sheet was loose in its end on the engine side. We have tightened it and bent a bit. I could check starting the car just in the garage, we tried normal start, we tried also starting with chokes under the wheels to give it some load. It was silent. So I cannot confirm 100%, but 98,6% it was the heat screen that was making noise.

Hopefully.
