Exhaust Help Needed
« on: September 15, 2016, 14:21:42 »
Dear Pagoda Family,

My mechanic mentioned that my exhaust system needs to be replaced.
He said it is "better" to order the "front piece" directly from MB (part #1134900920) see attachment because he says it fits better
than the front piece from Timevalve.  He said to order the the other 2 pieces from Timevalve and the chrome tips from Authentic Classics or another place.
Does this sound right?

The issue is that according to the Classic center, the front piece is No longer available.

Do I reach out to various on line websites to see if they have the front piece in stock or do I order the whole unit from Timevalve?
Also, do I get the installation kit from MB or from Timevalve?

Regards
Steven

Steven, if you haven't already done so, please read the other related thread just below on this page entitled "MB Exhaust System" started by Charles 230SL. Charles is apparently working with Timevalve to resolve a problem with the "front piece" you mention.

I have the Timevalve system from the headers back on my late 230.  I found Mike at Timevalve to be very knowledgeable and helpful which resulted in me being a very happy customer.  I would suggest that you call him and discuss your concerns.

Steven, I would not hesitate to order the complete stainless system from Timevalve. The problem I spoke about in my message is peculiar only to early 230SLs.

Timevalve forms the stainless steel pipes exactly as the OEM MB originals. Unfortunately, and as pointed out in the message string, the OEM Mercedes-Benz pipes for an early 230SL (part #113-490-02-19) don’t fit correctly. Therefore, Timevalve exactly duplicated incorrect MB originals. Mike at Timevalve has since tailored (shortened) the pipes - similar to the way JA1 needed to shorten the new OEM pipes on his client's 230. Again, this appears peculiar only to the early 230s.

Incidentally, I got my chrome tips from Authentic Classics. They arrived today and they're beautiful - you won't be disappointed.

Thank you for your response.
Your plan is EXACTLY what I am going to do!

Rough cost of the total Exhaust?
Did you use their hardware or did you get the kit from MB?

Hi Steven,

As I understand it, the early 113's are affected by the exhaust pieces off the manifold.  I have stainless from Timevalve all the way, but the fit is tricky.  Joe A. did mine, and he asked Timevalve to send him the three sections unwelded, so he could make them fit properly.  He welded them in place, and the fit is perfect.  A full day job though, at least.

The tips from George at Authentic Classics are amazing.  You may have to put crimps in the ends to make them fit firmly on the end of the stainless pipes.

Hope that helps.

Mike
Authentic Classics has 2 types
Type one from MB and cost around 200 bucks
Type 2 is theirs and cost 29.95

Which ones are you referring to?

Steven, the P05C system (http://www.timevalve.com/cat/us/p05c.html) was $861.00 + shipping. I used Timevalve's installation kit.
I ordered the $29.95/ea tips from Authentic Classics - again, no disappointments.
