Author Topic: Accuracy question: spare tire cover on vertically mounted spares?  (Read 6144 times)

I tried to look in the archives but could not find out for sure if the Euro Spec 1964 230SL (vertically mounted spare) came with a spare tire cover.  It was not with the car prior to dissambly for restoration, but this does not mean anything.  I am wondering if no spare cover is what is "correct" for this car.

Thanks for your help,

Jerome

Jerome,  I have the same car and do not believe it came with a cover.  Same with the W108s.

Jerome,

Agree with Andy.
On the upright spare wheel (until serial no. 007204) there was definitely no spare tire cover.

 ;)

Whether or not the spare in my 1964 230SL _should_ have a cover, I really didn't like it not having one, as it was almost impossible to keep luggage etc clean. It took me a while to find a suitable cover that didn't cost  a lot, and found that the VW T2 camper van tyres were almost the same size. One supplier is http://www.pktrim.org.uk/epages/BT2564.sf/en_GB/?ObjectID=1472925&ViewAction=FacetedSearchProducts&SearchString=wheel+cover

I have been very pleased with my plain black one.

I have four original equipment covers available - very good condition.

I have an early 230sl with vertical spare but have an even more basic need -- the rubber floor mats.  Does anyone supply mats for that configuration?  I've found several suppliers for the horizontal spare configuration but nothing for the vertical configuration. I was thinking about just getting an upholsterer to make a mat out of carpet but I would rather prefer a more original solution.

RH,
I found one on ebay a long time ago (when I joined ebay).
Best is to look at a rubber mat company and have one made.

I have an early 230sl with original rubber mat and original tyre cover. So I guess that car left the factory with cover.

In "Factory Original Mercedes SL" by James Taylor, there is no mention of a tyre cover until the tyre was moved in October 1964 to a flat position and a plastic cover provided to hold the bag for the small tools.
